The President unveils his immigration plan. The U.S. fears China could take down the nation's power grid. And Bill Cosby is hit with more allegations.
It's Friday, and here are the 5 things to know for your New Day
1. IMMIGRATION
Unilateral changes: As promised, the White House unveiled President Obama's new immigration plan - one that shields five million undocumented immigrants. The executive action is the most sweeping overhaul of the immigration system in decades and comes despite Republican claims he is acting illegally by making the unilateral move. Obama rejected accusations that he is offering a free pass to undocumented immigrants and warned in his prime-time address that he would boost border security and make it harder for unauthorized outsiders to get into the country. Republicans are hopping mad and the president's decision won't do anything to thaw chilly relations on Capitol Hill.
2. CHINA POWER GRID
Yikes: Well, here's a comforting thought. China and "probably one or two other" countries have the capacity to shut down the U.S. power grid and other critical infrastructure through a cyber attack, the head of the National Security Agency told a Congressional panel yesterday. Adm. Michael Rogers didn't name the other countries, but Russia is also believed to be part of the club. The United States has detected malware from China and elsewhere on U.S. computers systems that affect the daily lives of every American. Cyber security experts predict that computer hacks will likely cause major security and financial damage in the next decade.
3. FERGUSON
Interesting timing: Sources tell CNN that Ferguson, Missouri, Police Officer Darren Wilson is in the final stages of negotiations with city officials to resign. Wilson is the white officer who shot and killed Michael Brown, an unarmed black teen, back in August, sparking violent protests. Wilson could announce as soon as today his resignation plans, the same day a St. Louis County grand jury meets to deliberate and possibly decide whether to indict him. The talks could still collapse, the sources close to the talks say.
4. WINTER WEATHER
First snow, now rain: Upstate New York just can't catch a break. After a year's worth of snow in just a few days, the rain is coming. It also sounds good until you realize that all that snow will just act like a giant sponge and soak up all of that rain. What's worse than snow? Wet heavy snow. Roofs already groaning under the weight of up to 9 feet of snow could really feel the strain as rain begins to fall over the weekend and temperatures warm.
5. COSBY
Under a microscope: It seems lately as if every day brings another allegation that further dismantles Bill Cosby's image as the jovial, pudding-loving patriarch whose family-friendly brand of comedy tickled successive generations. Though the star has vehemently denied most of the accusations that he drugged and sexually assaulted young women seeking career guidance, the stories are taking their toll on his reputation and bankroll. Even as Cosby shoots a story down, another surfaces. And while the 77-year-old comic has never been convicted or faced a judge and jury over the allegations, it's clear many people have already tried him in their minds.
Those are your five biggies for the day. Here are a couple of others that are brewing and have the Internet buzzing.
