Five Things to Know for Your New Day – Friday, September 5

So many crises, so little time at the NATO summit. The world got a little less sassy with Joan Rivers' death. And an asteroid will zip by Earth this weekend.

It's Friday, and here are the "5 things to know for your New Day."

So much to talk about: As top world leaders meet for a second and final day, there's a lot at stake. From a relentless conflict in Ukraine, to the fast-spreading ISIS terror group that is conquering parts of Iraq. It's no wonder this week's NATO summit in Wales is considered "the most important gathering of leaders in more than a decade." Here's what to expect from this crucial meeting.

Farewell to the queen of comedy: The world got a little less sassy a little less funny yesterday. Joan Rivers started her career as a stand-up comedian - quick to poke fun at herself in her trademark raspy voice. By the time she died yesterday at 81, she was a  pioneering icon who mocked the world in her own brutal but hilarious way. If there's an afterlife, it's got one heck of a comedy duo. Her good friend Robin Williams died last month in an apparent suicide.

Close call: Keep your helmet nearby! A newly discovered asteroid will zip by Earth  on Sunday. But not to worry - NASA says it won't hit Earth or any of the thousands of satellites orbiting the planet. The asteroid won't be visible to the naked eye, but it will give astronomers and scientists a chance to study it.

Is yours on the list? Health isn't just about how we live. It’s also about where we live. Just ask the residents of these 10 cities, which topped our list because they shine in more ways than one.

Deal or no deal? Ukraine is cautiously optimistic that a ceasefire will go into effect today. The nation's east has been in conflict for months, and  rebel leaders in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions say they will order a ceasefire this afternoon "if agreements are achieved and Ukrainian officials sign a plan for a political settlement of the conflict." And so the world awaits.

Those are your five biggies for the day. Here are a few others that are brewing and have the Internet buzzing.

Sneaky rabbit: This ball of fur taught us one thing: When the going gets tough, sometimes you gotta break the rules. Or something like that.

No, human, no! Husky throws a tantrum when playtime is over. Let's just say the lil' fella throws a better one than most babies.

Girls gone wild: Robert Downey Jr. went to South Korea. Then this happened.

Can you stand the heat? You know you're a daredevil when you get dangerously close to the fiery, bubbling Marum volcano in Vanuatu. Let's not try this at home, kids.

There you go. All you need to know to get an early start to your morning.
Be sure to tune in to "New Day," from 6 to 9 a.m. ET, join us at and go and have a GREAT NEW DAY!
