5 Things to Know for Your New Day – Wednesday, June 4

Video captures the moment the Taliban released Bowe Bergdahl. The Mississippi U.S. Senate primary is one heck of a nail-biter. And who's the creepy mythical man behind the alleged stabbings by two 12-year-olds?

It's Wednesday, and here are the “5 Things to Know for Your New Day."

1. BOWE BERGDAHL RELEASE

White flag, handshakes:  A new video purports to show a gaunt-looking Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl being released by the Taliban  five years after he was captured in Afghanistan.

2. MISSISSIPPI GOP PRIMARY

The waiting game: The Mississippi GOP Senate primary is turning into one heck of a nail-biter.  The razor-thin margin between Sen. Thad Cochran and main challenger Chris McDaniel made it too close to call this morning. With 98% of precincts reporting, both candidates were short of the 50% needed to avoid a runoff, according to Associated Press numbers. And so we wait, and wait.

3. SEVERE WEATHER

Midwest takes a hit: Have you seen hail the size of a baseball? We haven't. The same can't be said of folks in parts of Nebraska, though. Severe thunderstorms swept through the state yesterday, pelting areas with massive hail.  At one point, a storm churning through the state was over 10 miles tall, CNN meteorologist Chad Myers said. "If you're in Nebraska, Iowa or Missouri, this is going to be a very long night," he said.

4. DAN MARINO

Er, about that lawsuit ... : One of the greatest quarterbacks in National Football League history is withdrawing his name from a concussion lawsuit against the league, according to  reports. Dan Marino and 14 other players had filed a lawsuit claiming the NFL knew of a link between concussions and long-term health problems and did nothing about it.

5. SLENDERMAN

Creepy mythical figure: A menacing, faceless specter in a dark suit allegedly inspired  two 12-year-old girls to stab a friend multiple times.  But who's this creepy Internet bogeyman? This ghoul who lurks in the Web's darkest corners and has mutated time and again to suit the dreams and desires of his devotees?

There you go. All you need to know to get an early start to your morning.
Be sure to tune in to "New Day" from 6 to 9 a.m. ET. Join us at NewDayCNN.com, and go and have a GREAT NEW DAY!

I miss the "and here are some other things" also. They were a wonderful added bonus that touched your heart or lightened your day. I'd like for you to bring them back.

-I miss the "and here are some other things buzzing.." section too!! It was my favorite part of my morning right when I came in to work.. and I was constantly emailing my mom and sister the videos. They're my favorite.

I hope the come back soon.

For the time being.. I will just have to settle with going to the videos section of CNN and Scrolling through the Collections list. I just really enjoyed my daily chuckle with those videos.

Agree with CGilbee, the videos that were usually featured at the bottom of this blog were a great way to start the workday. Seeing as the "5 things to know" is always just the top 5 news stories on every news website, I doubt I'll continue to read this blog if the creative "here are some other things" section is discontinued.

I agree, I look everyday for the other things at the bottom. This is very depressing to see this missing two days in a row.

My primary reason for visiting 5 Things was the "and here are some other things..." . Please bring it back.

Why are all news outlets treating Slenderman as a mythical creature which lends a certain legitimacy to the story? Slenderman was made up by people on a web site as a joke. The story should not be called mythical as if it has some basis in folklore nor should there be talk of devotees or believers. Is that how you treat stories about Twilight or Bugs Bunny?

I second CGilbee... I really enjoyed the "bonus" stories/videos on the daily blog. I won't bother going to another part of the site to find them... I like that they were right there everyday.

I too miss the extras segments at the end with the fun videos and inspirational stuff! I often used these videos in my classes at school to inspire and start the day off right! They were easier to access than having to scroll through all of the videos. Bring it back please!

I also miss the additional videos at the end. I checked out CNN.com/videos and was not impressed. I know it was probably extra work for your staffers, but I think that there are many people that appreciated their effort.

I miss the amusing/interesting videos at the end, as well. It was a refreshing way to start my day after tackling the Top 5 news bits. If you can't bring them all back, maybe just one or two. Thank you.

I miss the "and here are some other things..." too. Unless they are added back I probably won't even click on the "5 Things..." anymore. We all need to smile after seeing some of the sad and shocking items in "5 Things..." each day.

I, too, miss the additional news and videos. Very disappointed to see that feature is gone. I will be switching to the NY Times version of 'What you need to know for today."

I, too, miss the "and here are some other things" section of the blog. It's light-hearted and silly after reading and hearing about some of the dreadful events that take place around the world. Other than keeping up on the most popular stories, it is a main reason I read this blog.

I miss the "and here are some other things" too! And I appreciate your info on where to go get my own cute videos, but it's just not the same. "And here are some other things" was like my morning coffee. Please bring it back! I'm falling asleep at my desk.

I too miss "and here are some other things..." It would start each morning off with a smile or a laugh.
I know that friends enjoyed the pieces I shared with them. I recommended the twitter blog to numerous people because of the concise manner the news was presented and mostly because of the unique videos.
I am still forwarding the amazing cat mothering the ducklings.
