Join CNN's Kate Bolduan for a tour of the Sixties exhibit at Grand Central Terminal in New York City.
The 10-part series 'The Sixties' starts this Thursday, May 29 at 9 p.m. on CNN.
Deborah Peter is from Chibok, Nigeria, the same town where more than 200 schoolgirls were kidnapped by the Islamist terror group Boko Haram last month.
Though she is 15-years-old now, at age 12, Peter survived an attack by the same group – but her father and brother did not.
"They shot my dad in his chest three times," Peter recently told lawmakers on Capitol Hill.
The teenager shared how her father was a Christian pastor who refused to deny his faith so Boko Haram killed the man and his son.
Peter said she prays about the experience every day but after hearing about the other missing girls, she was inspired to share her story with the world.
"I want the world to know how terrible the Boko Haram is to my country. They're really horrible and they're really dangerous too."
While she lives in the United States and attends school on scholarship, Peter said she is excited for her education and might want to become a doctor or a dentist.
She called the missing girls her sisters and said she thinks by 'God's grace' she will see them again.
"We are like one family," she said.
