Five Things to Know for Your New Day – Tuesday, April 1

Hopes are dashed - again - in the search for Malaysia Airlines Flight 370. The death toll from Washington's mudslide rises - again. And there may be a cooling of tensions in Ukraine.

It's Tuesday, and here are the 5 things to know for your "New Day."

The known unknowns: The search for the missing Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 is going on three weeks now, and there's been nothing to show for it but condolences.

Hopes are dashed almost daily. Always the same story: Objects spotted from the air and from space. And when they're found, they turn out not to be from the missing plane. Three weeks ago, the last words reported from the cockpit of MH370 were "All right, good night." Yesterday, we learned that too was wrong. The real final quote was "Good night Malaysian three seven zero."

What's clear is that battery life will soon expire, silencing beacons from the flight's so-called black boxes - raising the possibility that a fruitless task of finding 239 missing people will become even more difficult.

Rising toll: The grim death toll from the massive landslide in rural Washington has risen to 24. And the discovery of three more bodies means the list of those confirmed killed probably will rise again soon. The youngest victim was 4 months old; the oldest, 71. There's another 22 still listed as missing.

Pulling back: Ever since Russia annexed Crimea, relations between Moscow and the West have plunged to their worst since the Cold War. It didn't help that Russia started massing troops on Ukraine's eastern border. Well, things may be looking up a bit.

Yesterday, Russian President Vladimir Putin told German Chancellor Angela Merkel that he's ordered a partial withdrawal of those troops. The State Department says that if it's true, "it would be a welcome preliminary step."

A new day in court: Michelle Byrom has been on Mississippi's death row since she was convicted in 2000 for masterminding a murder-for-hire plot to kill her allegedly abusive husband. This, despite her son admitting he did the killing. Yesterday brought some good news for the 57-year-old woman: The state's Supreme Court reversed the conviction and ordered a new trial.

Counting cars: General Motors issued a new recall yesterday. This one affects 1.3 million vehicles in the United States and it's for a sudden loss of power steering. Today, CEO Mary Barra will testify before Congress about how the company handled a different recall of 2.2 million vehicles in the United States for an ignition switch problem that has been tied to 13 deaths.

Those are your five biggies for the day. Remember, today is April Fools' Day. Don't believe everything you read on the Web. But we're better than that. So here are a few real items (we hope!) that have the Internet buzzing.

Well played, Mr. President: Remember this iconic picture of then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton?

Well, looks like someone's been teaching her husband Photoshop:

Baffling: This is a humidifier. This is a kitty. Let the cuteness ensue.

Bearing it: This is a puppy. This is a baby. Let the cuteness ensue again.

Bust a move: Last week, we had a grandma boogie down. Today, it's grandpa's turn. And the song is particularly apt.

Unexpected goodness: We saved the best for last. This waitress has the best shift ever. Watch - and have your faith in humanity restored.

There you go. All you need to know to get an early start to your morning. Be sure to tune in to "New Day," from 6 to 9 a.m. ET, join us at NewDayCNN.com and go and have a GREAT NEW DAY!
