Sochi’s opening ceremonies will include a Russian history lesson, investigators want Justin Bieber charged with a felony for allegedly egging his neighbor, and beware of faux Democratic websites made by the GOP.
Welcome to the Friday edition of “5 Things to Know for Your New Day."
1. OLYMPIC GAMES
Top secret top story: Shhh! It’s officially top secret – what the opening ceremonies will look like today. But rehearsals have been huge; people saw them and whispered details to the local media. Expect Russian history – but no Lenin, no Stalin. Speaking of leaks: An official said surveillance cameras caught people abusing hotel showers. Uh, wait. Surveillance cameras in bathrooms? Other officials say: never happened.
Rooting for team U.S.A. and like snowboarding? Check out Shaun White.
Jim Sciutto talks about terror intel at 6 and 8. Sports reporter Rachel Nichols and terror expert Paul Cruickshank join us at 7. Ian Lee talks Sochi foibles at 6.
2. JUSTIN BIEBER
Egg on his face: The Beeb hasn’t looked too hot lately. He faces misdemeanor charges in Miami on buzzed driving and resisting arrest and in Toronto on smacking a limo driver. On top of that, his plane got searched over the smell of pot on board. And remember when his neighbors accused him of egging their house in L.A.? Investigators want him charged with felony in that case, because it did $20,000 in damage.
Miami police released this surveillance video yesterday of Bieber being processed after allegedly drag racing drunk.
After all the stress, the Beeb was feeling a little worn down.
3. FAUX POLITICAL WEBSITE
Elephant in donkey’s clothing: Say you’re a Democrat, and you want to donate to a campaign, so you Google your favorite candidate’s website. There’s her smiling picture; colors are Dem blue. You donate, and whoops! Up pops a photo of George W. Bush saying: Thank you! Well, you should’ve read the fine print, because the GOP is making faux candidate sites for Dems that look pretty darn real – to get donations to beat them.
4. WINTER WEATHER
Black and white: First came whiteout conditions, then came the blackouts. Trees fell across power lines, so now utility crews are shimmying up poles – well, riding up in basket cranes - to string them back up. Hundreds of thousands of people without heat are sitting on their couches packed up in winter duds, from long johns to parkas, and looking at each other with flashlights.
Margaret Conley reports on the half-million without power at 6.
5. MOVIE THEATER SHOOTER
Popcorn vs. bullets: Curtis Reeves is that retired cop who allegedly shot a man he was arguing with in a Florida movie theater after the man threw popcorn on him. A court couldn’t decide two days ago whether or not to grant him a payable bail, so today, defense lawyers and prosecutors will go at it again. And infrared surveillance video of the shooting will be shown. Reeves' defense says he was scared of the bigger, younger man. The prosecutor paints the 71-year-old as a hothead.

Those are your five biggies for the day. Here are a couple of others that are brewing and have the Internet buzzing.
Like * Share: Hey, Facebook, my son died, and I really want to see his “look back” video. John, we hear your video plea. And we’ll make one for him. Coming soon?
Searching for rainbow: Google is all decked out in color for the Olympics today. The palette goes beyond Olympic colors - to those of the LBGT flag. It added a blurb from Olympic bylaws on discrimination.
3-D printer in its down time: When it’s not printing out guns, it plays air hockey. And the darn things win, too.
Love and protect: A tiny toy poodle protects a baby from the terrifying vacuum cleaner.
Balloondoggled: So, you blow up a skinny balloon, twist it into a wiener dog, and it pops. Better take lessons from this guy. Yeah, those are made of balloons.
There you go. All you need to know to get an early start to your morning.
Be sure to tune in to "New Day," from 6 to 9 a.m. ET, join us at NewDayCNN.com and go and have a GREAT NEW DAY!
You know who else will never be able to use his "tools" again, or anything else for that matter? The guy that old man shot and killed. The old man got to raise that daughter that was on the stand. The young guy's 2 year-old daughter now grows up without a father.
Old or young, you shot and killed someone. Time to spend the rest of your life locked up away from the society you once swore to protect.
Slow news day.
The sweet compassion the toy poodle shows in the video...touching. The innovative brilliance of the balloon creations are very inspiring. Made me smile and say wow!
Much obliged. Do you know where we can donate to the free justin bieber fund?
Something else to start your day: democrats and Republicans are a waste of oxygen.
I think I would have survived not knowing any of this stuff. So, "Thanks for nothing."
Not really the point, Bob.
