Apple Making Bigger iPhone?

Ahh, Apple rumors. One tiny leak from the factory floor, or some creative work inside Photoshop with an existing product and the community of Mac users and Apple fans go wild.

A rumor of a larger iPhone, however, is one I would believe. Apple has kept screens pretty much the same since the introduction of the original iPhone with a 3.5" diagonal screen. They upped resolutions along the way with the Retina Display which jammed more pixels into the same sized display. Then in 2012 they added an extra bit of screen real estate, a .5", with the iPhone 5.

But along the way the competition has heated up. Android's operating system has caught up in terms of functionality and found a home on dozens of different smart devices– all of which have gotten bigger than the iPhone. Those larger screens are popular for a simple reason: photos and video. And as our phones get faster connections, streaming video is becoming even more desired.

What should we expect from Apple in an iPhone 6? Rumor says there will be a 4.5-inch and 5-inch screen which puts them in the same league as the competition. I'm sure they'll also throw in a new, thinner design and change up some of the functionality. And of course, the usual upgrades of an increase in camera resolution on the front-facing and rear cameras and the speed of the internal processor to make the phone work quicker.

How will an iPhone 6 stack up against the current offerings of Android devices? Here's the simple specs:

Samsung's Galaxy S 4 has a 5-inch Full HD (441 pixels per inch) display which is bright, colorful and great for watching video and looking at pictures you've snapped.

Samsung's Galaxy Note 3, packs a whopping 5.7" Full HD display into the smart phone  (it's the same resolution as the Galaxy S4 it just has a larger screen). Again, it's a great size for watching videos.

LG is also packing more pixels in their Android smart phones. The G2 has a stunning 5.2-inch display, also full HD but with 423 pixels per inch. The more pixels, the clearer the image is.

The Nexus 5 from Google is also jamming in more. The screen clocks in just under 5-inches at 4.95-inches but has 445 pixels per inch. The screen is bright, clear and impressive for watching video.

If phones get much bigger, we may be less inclined to keep them with us at all times since they won't easily tuck-away into a pocket or purse so there is clearly a limit to how big our phone screens will get.

I had an iPhone from day one and switched last year to a Galaxy Note 2 and love it! I can easily carry it in my pocket, but I don't wear skinny jeans either (are those still in style?). Anyway, I think of my phone more like a computer on the go, not just a talking device. When I do use the phone portion, I mostly use speaker or bluetooth. The majority of the time I am playing games, watching videos or movies and reading a lot–way more than I use the device to talk on!

So, if you are just needing that tiny little device as a talking tool, go Apple, or you might as well go back to a Razor! If you like to watch and read and even write, check out the BigBoy. The note 2 totally kicks the iPhone's arse in multi-tech capabilities!!The is even a pen that is awesome. If you want a tech device, don't be a zombie/sheep, go Droid.
BTW, still love MacBooks over PC's ANY DAY! If iPhone catches up on screen size and tech functions with iPhone they will have a return customer... but they are sooo behind the times!

I have a note 3 and it replaced a phone, tablet, universal remote, camera, and my wallet! I use this phone for everything my wife has an iPhone 5 and ipad mini that can't do a 3rd of what this phone can. Best of all her apple stuff was at least $1200 combined, the note 3 $299. The iPhone 6 will need to support holograms to be better than this phone!

You all look so silly trying to adjust to the larger phones. Try an HTC One, great phone with a larger screen. Makes the current iPhone look like a toy. Come on Apple, get with the times!

I'm laughing at them laughing. I cannot wait for those same reporters praising how nice the iPhone's size is and how genius idea it is when/if it comes out.

Is it just me or is Apple's new definition of innovation making things smaller and bigger? Sorry, Steve. I guess the company has died with you.

i have note 3 , i bought it because i need one in all function instead of carrying ipad and phone ... , apple can make phone bigger in same overall size cutting some edges in the same body , and honestly 4 inch screen its too small for multimedia application .

All we do is sit around and talk about how rediculous the larger phones are. A co-worker bought one over Christmas and is always complaining about carrying a laptop on her hip. Seriously don't mess with a good thing Apple. I will not use a bigger device. I will hold on to my 4s until it's last little digital breath.

Am I the only one that would love an iPhone that's 75% smaller than the current model? I want something that slides into my pocket, not that I need a seperate bag to lug around. Super huge screen is overrated

Just make them a little bigger, but not the size of the Galaxy S4. My G4 sits on my desk, while my iPhone 5 does all of the heavy lifting.....

That is like saying you use a hand screwdriver instead of the power tool? The Droid has so much more capabilities than an iPhone?! I mean it's not even close.

A little bigger for the iPhone 6 would be cool as long it met or exceeded its rivals in other areas. I love apple anger hope they can meet or beat their competition.

Android has 'caught up' ?? Android has been ahead of iOS for years. People are just not realizing it.

It is Apple who is playing catch-up here, both in hardware and in software.

Check out the latest offerings from HTC, Motorolla, and Samsung.

The iphone used to be cutting edge, now its the best phone for people too stupid to learn something new.

But Apple told me the iPhone 5 screen was the perfect size for human beings at that any screen that was larger was just stupid. I hope Apple doesn't try to tell me something different now or I am going to feel scammed.

I've played with 4.7" screens, and appreciate the larger size than my normal iPhone 5. So a 4.5" would be perfect IMHO. Bigger, but not too big.

And as far as too big to be seen on your face, there are Bluetooth devices you can wear so you don't even have to bother touching your phone to use it for it's communication purposes.

4.5" would be great. Bigger, but not too much.

You point about how big the phones will get is off. I will not by an Apple product until the screen gets bigger. That tiny thing is nearly useless, to me. However, the real point is when I can finally carry only a single device. I will not buy a tablet until they put in a cell antenna. I refuse to carry multiple similar devices, especially when that second device doesn't effectively replace another device. Honestly, what is the point of a tablet versus a laptop when I still have to carry multiple devices? Why give up the power of a laptop at a similar cost just because one is a little thinner and a little lighter? There is only one reason the tablets don't have cell antennas, and that is to keep you buying multiple devices. As for me, they can keep the tablets and I'll take the bigger phone.

Increasing the size isnt the problem for apple it has no was of competing with google. google is making all the greatest tech moves my nexus 4 can do alot more then any iphone could ever do. and this is really an yr old.
The best in class phone right now is LG g2 it offers alot more then any other smartphone.
apple and samsung r basically marketing companies samsung is also great with hardware but any addon software it has created on top of android isnt anything amazing. it has a massive following becoz it spends alot on marketing.
apple iphone was hot but its no longer 2008 there r alot better products out there which r massively better in every possible way.
Tim cook is a supply chain guy i dont think he has got what it takes to makes any innovation what has he doen since he took over? maps app was a total fuckup the colors of the iphone r really messed up. iphone needs a big massive upgrade otherwise it will be like blackberry

I have another few comments. I downsized in screen size from a 4.3" Android phone to an iPhone 5 with a 4" screen. I did not like having to handle a phone that was unwieldy when driving, walking with something in your other hand, opening doors, etc. CNN seems to have jumped on the CNET bandwagon with all the iPhone rumors.

Apple should not be in the business of competing with other companies on single issues like screen size. Samsung's plans have been shown to be failing, as it relates to market share. Other Android phones have increased their market share, such as HTC and LG. The phone wars are portrayed as a Samsung – Apple War. This is not the case. Samsung has many other companies to compete with. Apple is in a league of its own, with it's own customer base and motives. They build quality products. What is a two year old iPhone worth? Compare that with what a two year old Samsung device is worth.

It was mentioned in the article that Samsung has a phone with a "whopping" 5.7" screen. What on Earth would I want that on a belt clip? That's a tablet, not a phone. I have no desire to hold a tablet up to my face, or put something that size attached to a belt clip. Just sitting down would be uncomfortable and ridiculous looking.

My iPhone 5 is the correct size for a cell phone. It is comfortable to operate when doing other tasks. People need to remember that a cell phone is primarily a PHONE. If you're playing numerous games and want them in to HD, get a tablet to carry around with you. Quit this never-ending push for ever-more massive cell phones. And quit reporting on rumors of such things.
