Five Things to Know for Your New Day – Tuesday, January 21, 2014

Warnings and worries rise as the Winter Games near. Another snowstorm is approaching. And will all the drama drown out Gov. Christie’s big day?

Welcome to the Tuesday edition of “5 Things to Know for Your New Day.”
1. GOV. CHRIS CHRISTIE

Big day: Well, today is the big day for New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie. But for those close to the embattled leader, every day of the last few weeks must have seemed like big days. Today may be different, right? Instead of dealing with allegations, accusations or investigations, Christie will be greeted with a celebration. His inauguration. He will be sworn in to his second term in a day packed with festivities. But will it be overshadowed by all the drama around him?

Standing next to Christie during the ceremony will be Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno. But complicating the issue is the fact that she is at the center of one of the accusations against Christie’s administration. Christie has already let go two members of his inner circle over a different scandal. One needs a scorecard to keep track of the endless finger-pointing and spiraling list of players connected to this. Oh, here’s one.

Erin McPike will be live to talk about this story. Republican New Jersey Assemblyman Jon Bramnick joins us at 7. Dana Bash, Hilary Rosen and Kevin Madden join us at 8.

2. KENNETH BAE

Still waiting: We have heard so much about Kenneth Bae in recent weeks. Unfortunately, it was because of Dennis Rodman. But let’s not talk about that anymore. Now, finally, we've heard from Bae, the American who’s being held in North Korea. Well, kind of. In a video statement sanctioned by North Korea, Bae said he had committed a "serious crime.” He said the U.S. government needs to try harder to get him released. Some are wondering if Bae’s confession was made under duress. North Korea has had a history of exacting false confessions. In December, a California man was freed from North Korea after being forced to give a false confession, he said afterward. Bae, a devout Christian, was arrested in November 2012 along North Korea's northeastern coast. The country says Bae planned to bring down the government through religious activities.

Pamela Brown will be live on this story.

3. SOCHI OLYMPICS THREAT

Winter worries: Wanted posters. Warships. Warnings. Those are not exactly the phrases athletes want to hear leading into the Winter Olympic Games. But that’s just what’s happening as the Games in Sochi approach and threats of terror attacks are dominating the headlines. Russian President Vladimir Putin has said everything will be all right. But some U.S. lawmakers - and at least one Olympic athlete - have said they're worried about the situation.

Barbara Starr will be live on this story at 6. Phil Black and Don Borelli, from the FBI, joins us at 7.

4. TEXAS GOVERNOR'S RACE

Changing the story: Whose love life isn’t complicated? But it gets even more complicated when your past relationships are part of your political biography. Ask Wendy Davis, the Texas gubernatorial candidate. You remember her. She emerged onto the national scene last summer after her marathon filibuster against proposed abortion laws in the state. The attention gave her the support to announce a bid for governor. But now the spotlight is different. For some time, Davis has told a story about her tough early life as a single mother and how she was able to lift herself up to go to Harvard. But now Davis is saying she hasn't been totally accurate about her life's story, a compelling tale she has used to appeal to voters in Texas and bolster her national profile. "My language should be tighter," she said. "I'm learning about using broader, looser language. I need to be more focused on the detail." Whoops.

John Berman will give you the latest on this story.

5. SNOWSTORM

Cold and colder: For some of you, the temperatures will be dropping early this week. A batch of cold air is expected to move from the Tennessee Valley and lower Midwest over to the East Coast. So you know what that means. Snow. New snow. There will be 3 to 9 inches of new snow from the Virginias to Massachusetts, the National Weather Service says. Add the areas that are frigid already - about all the eastern half  of the nation - will shiver through temperatures 10 to 25 degrees below average. The vast area is expected to stay in the icebox until the weekend.

Indra Petersons will give you the latest forecast.

Those are your five biggies for the day. Here are a few others that are brewing and have the Internet buzzing:

Boxer fail: You know who would be the best person to bring in to calm down an unruly crowd of protesters? That’s right. A heavyweight boxing champ! See how this works out so swimmingly in this video when ex-champ Vitali Klitschko is brought to calm crowds in Kiev.

BFF: There’s a lot going on in this video. But on this one, focus on how much effort the dancing lady’s friend puts in to help her. They must be best friends.[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qAB_u7AT-vE&feature=youtu.be]

Confused puppy: Either this puppy is really confused by acoustic guitar riffs, or this is how this puppy gets funky. Either way, it doesn’t get much cuter than this.[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K_2-pMDVA6c]

Catwalk: Wait for it. Wait for it. Ah, that was unexpected.
[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iEtQeoTpf-g]

Baby wrecking ball: This little one brings so much emotion and rage singing Miley Cyrus’ song, he almost breaks out of his tiny car seat. Now what does he know about heartbreak?

I avoided CNN.com for a year because I just couldn't figure out all the coverage they still give Sarah Palin. I could not figure out who she was sleeping with at CNN. She is surely not news worthy, has nothing os interest to say, and only pops up when she wants to promote her self or a silly poorly written book. So I came by CNN.com to give them another chance and what do I see? Palin spouting off about Obama and MLK. Just yapping foolishness as usual. It appears CNN.com thinks no one else is worth reporting about or perhaps those people are too smart to give CNN.com the time of day. I think the later is true. Good-Bye CNN you were once a respectable source of news, now you are just sad and pathetic.

How about some news about the corruption in DC. Does it not exist for CNN. Tired of hearing about Christis,
Mor interested in the IRS, Obamacare and the corruption in DC where all the money is.
How about some serious reporting CNN

Good thing CNN included the snowstorm. Otherwise, they would have been 0 for 5 today on newsworthy points.

  4. Seriously

This honestly sounds like it was written by a high school sophomore. Very unimpressed.

    What's so difficult to understand about Wendy Davis? (1) She's a lawyer. (2) She's a feminist, bra-burning femi-nazi. (3) She's a liberal communist. Oh, and did I mention ... she's a lawyer. 'Nuff said.
