Critic on George Zimmerman's Painting: 'This is Not Art...It's a Poster'

George Zimmerman can now add "painter" to his resume after the former neighborhood watchman purportedly listed an original painting on eBay.

The 18-by-24-inch canvas features a blue, waving American flag with the words, "God, one nation, with liberty and justice for all" emblazoned across it.

The auction was posted Monday at a starting bid of 99 cents and is scheduled to end Saturday. As of Tuesday night, 108 bids were logged for the painting, ratcheting the price up to $110,100. The next bid would top $110,200.

Zimmerman's brother, Robert Zimmerman Jr., confirmed that George painted the piece.

But is it any good?

"Honestly, I wouldn't even call this a work of art," says Jerry Saltz, Senior Art Critic for New York Magazine.

“It's a travesty. It’s a poster.”

Saltz considers it absurd that Zimmerman’s painting is fetching a price tag that places him in the same class as artists Pablo Picasso and Andy Warhol.

“To me, what he made was a simpleton, copy, quasi-psychotic [painting],” Saltz says.

“What that speaks to that [bidders] think that George Zimmerman is a cause. They're not buying this work of art. They're buying the idea that George Zimmerman, a person that, in my opinion, got away with a crime, is worthy of supporting.”

Zimmerman got away with a murder. This is a known fact. However you spin this fact does not detract from the fact itself. An opinion or bias would be that he is despicable, but facts are facts. They don't change based on someone's opinion. And P.F.G. – why don't you find statistics on how many white toddlers are killed each year and make the same argument about the Casey Anthony trial, which also received a lot of obsessive publicity. Now, do you see how stupid your comment is?

And BTW, CNN does not owe the unrepentant murderer Zimmerman any sort of apology. Anyone who would claim otherwise is an immoral imbecile. And John – look up the word "diatribe" before using it in a sentence next time.

American flag. Check. Pledge of Allegence. Check. So Saltz thinks the flag and the pledge are psychotic, because there is nothing else to the painting.

So who is this idiot to do a character assassination on CNN & you just stand their & allow this to take place. This individual spent 80% of the conversation in a hateful & spiteful diatrabe. Who is he to say what someone should pay for something that is an investment. It is quite obvious that he is a man of low intellect & even lower class. This was beyond a reasonable doubt that i have seen the lowest & most disgusting event on CNN. CNN in my opinion owes Mr. Zimmerman an apology.

The ongoing obsession with George Zimmerman has become surreal. About 1,100 black teenagers are murdered in the US every year – around three per day – and some people just can't let the Zimmerman case go even after his acquittal. The evidence presented in court pointed strongly to Trayvon Martin being the aggressor in their physical confrontation. He brought his fists to a gunfight.

Let Zimmerman sell his lame artwork to people who are dumb enough to pay him for it. Stalking him serves no good purpose.

"in my opinion, got away with a crime"

Those who can do, and those who cannot become critics.

Art has long been used to make political statements, and this painting is speaking to politically driven prosecutions, it speaks to piss poor parents who try to blame their gross failures on others.

In light of the all out media smear campaign and death threats my sympathy lies with the Zimmerman family. Thugvon was one of tens of thousands of young males who feel entitled to lie, cheat, steal and assault, and the only difference between those cases and Thugvon is the person he assaulted had white skin and Trayvon's parents had ties to the political machine.

They made Zimmerman a high profile figure with their PR campaign, so it is poetic that their actions led to Zimmerman being able to make money this way.

His next painting should be one from his point of view of Thugvon standing over him snarling, and after that he should do one of the parents who paid little attention to Thugvon until it became profitable to do so, surrounded by piles of cash. After selling the originals, George Zimmerman should start a company selling T shirts and targets.

This critic has his opinion about Zimmerman, just as Zimmerman had about Trayvon Martin that night.
Also, you might wish to check your facts, because it is ONLY Zimmerman with an actual police rap sheet. Also, his racist and misogynist speech can be found in his internet history. Even after his acquittal, seems to me that it's Zimmerman who feels entitled to break the law. It's also clear from this auction Zimmerman is only for HIMSELF, while the Martin family has been working for the rights of OTHERS.
Good for Zimmerman for finding a creative outlet to deal with the situation he, himself, created. Unfortunately, Trayvon Martin will NEVER have that chance.

JD, you are more despicable than Zimmerman. He lied to save his butt. You have never even met the thousands of young men that you speak of and yet, you're passing judgement on them. "Thugvon"? That's how you refer to a deceased teenager you've never met? Seriously, you're the lowest of the bottom feeders.

Jerry Saltz Senior art critic for New York Magazine, Your comment about George Zimmerman in your opinion, got away with a crime shows your bias towards George Zimmerman. He was found Not Guilty by a Jury in a Court of law. Read the Constitution of the United States. Innocent until proven guilty by a Court of Law. You never examined this art work in person so here again your opinion is Noll and Void. Maybe the bids will reach $1,000,000.00. That should make your day, if not you it will for George Zimmerman.

    1. 90% of the bids for this "original" artwork are from NEW users.

    2. Despite having over a hundred bids, about only eight users are actually bidding for it.

    3. The same eight users have a bidding history of one item and that is this artwork.

The bidding history alone from the users bidding on it should be a clue for some people, but apparently GZ has insulted what little intelligence some people have. If you want to believe that ten people just made Ebay accounts for the sole purpose of purchasing GZ's artwork, stay stupid. GZ is not getting paid for this item and anyone believes its worth 100k, I got a few bridges to sell you.
