The weather gets ugly for Thanksgiving week travel, the pros and cons of the Iran nuclear deal, and the national Christmas tree arrives in Washington.
It's Monday, and here are the “5 Things to Know for Your New Day."
Every weekday morning around 6, we’ll hit the top five stories of the day, clue you in on a few other buzzy items and let you know about some of the must-watch stories coming up on CNN’s morning show “New Day.”
1. WINTER WEATHER
Over the river and through the woods: The wicked wintry weather that pummeled the West Coast is now barreling across the country, threatening to ruin millions of holiday travel plans just before Thanksgiving. More than 300 flights have already been canceled in the Dallas-Fort Worth area - not exactly a bastion for snowstorms. Sleet and freezing rain will keep blanketing parts of the Southern Plains and Southern Rockies today. And after the storm deluges parts of the South with rain tonight, it'll start zeroing in on the Northeast. And that could spell more travel nightmares. Stay tuned.

2. IRAN NUCLEAR DEAL
Success or "historic failure"? Depending on who you ask, the weekend deal to rein in Iran's nuclear program is one or the other. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says: "What was concluded in Geneva ... is not a historic agreement, it's a historic mistake." If you ask the Obama administration, the deal will make Iran less of a threat to Israel.
The agreement is supposed to freeze some Iranian nuclear development and remove Iran's stockpile of uranium enriched to 20% purity. The West has long worried that Iran could use its nuclear program to produce atomic weapons. Iran insists its nuclear program is purely for civilian purposes, with no long-term goal of developing a nuclear weapons arsenal. Tehran will see some sanctions relief while the details are worked out.

3. OBAMA POLL
Managing the government: Is America losing confidence in Barack Obama. The numbers don't look good, but these things can change over time. For now, only four out of 10 Americans believe the president can manage the federal government effectively. Here's why. The brand new CNN/ORC International survey says 53% of Americans believe that Obama is not honest and trustworthy, the first time that a clear majority in CNN polling has felt that way.

4. MACY'S PARADE
Shamu protest: What would the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade be without a side of controversy? Normal, but this year isn't. Never afraid to splash in the spotlight, the animal rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) takes issue with the SeaWorld float. It shows orcas frolicking in the ocean with their families. PETA says SeaWorld deprives them of such liberties. An online petition would sink the float. How 'bout a second helping? Joan Jett is looking for a new float to rock on. Ranchers got her booted from the South Dakota float. Jett's a vegetarian and a supporter of PETA. It's kind of like asking Kanye West to do an endorsement for Taylor Swift.
Now, fast-forward to Christmas. The Capitol Christmas tree arrives at the White House today. The 88-foot Engelmann spruce comes to Washington from the Colville National Forest in northeast Washington state.

5. POSTAL WORKER DEATH
One life taken, another saved: Someone shot and killed a postal worker over the weekend in Maryland. Twenty-six-year-old Tyson Jerome Barnette was running someone else's route when he was gunned down. Authorities are baffled, and no witnesses have come forward. Rewards totaling $125,000 are being offered to solve the case.
In California, a quick-thinking Marine vet probably saved the life of a woman who apparently jumped from the third level of the Oakland Coliseum yesterday. Police say he shielded her fall with his own body. Both are in the hospital. His injuries are not life-threatening. No one seems to know why she took the plunge.

Those are your five biggies for the day. Here are a few others that are brewing and have the Internet buzzing.
- Yawn: Compared with the VMAs, the American Music Awards barely shook the Richter scale. Pit Bull stayed muzzled. Sure, Miley Cyrus was there, but no twerking with Robin Thicke. But, then again, a repeat would have been passé. So, what's the next best thing? How 'bout a sad-eyed kitten. Calling Dr. Freud.
- Bruuuce: Ready to get your Springsteen on this morning? "The Boss" is out with the title track to his upcoming album "High Hopes." You can pick it up on iTunes. All 12 tracks come out in January. Some are cover tunes. Others appeared on earlier albums. Is this a recycling project? Is the E Street Band cleaning out the closet? These may be new studio tracks or live versions. No one is saying right now. We'll know more in the new year.
- That's a lot of lights: For David Richards, the holiday season is about joy, good cheer and smashing a mark recognized by the Guinness World Records. The lawyer and his family strung more than a half a million bulbs around their house in the Australian capital of Canberra to reclaim the title for lights on a residential property. That's 31 miles of lights, just in case you're counting. Richards set the world record in 2011 with 331,038 lights, only to see the Gay family in Lagrangeville, New York, snatch it away with 346,283 lights in 2012. The money raised from curious onlookers goes to charity.
- 4X4 cat cam: Here's a clever idea. Take a high-quality camera, strap it to a remote-controlled car and send it into the lion's den. Oops. It looks more like a snack to the lionesses than a photo op.
- I'll have another order of clams, please: Is this an otter or a pig? This rescued sea otter can't get enough of his favorite treat. We hope there's a Weight Watchers plan for critters.

Seems I am always having to correct CNN! 1. MAJOR PUBLIC HEALTH GROUPS say they're concerned that ObamaCare's high tobacco-use penalties — in some cases adding thousands of dollars to the cost of insurance — are forcing smokers out of coverage and denying them access to cessation programs.
2. Bipartisan push in the Senate for more IRAN sanctions as the deal Obama made is hailed DANGEROUS and reckless around the country.
3. Most people do not trust Obama CNN says it is 53 % it is more like 60 % but hey you know how CNN is.
These are the MAJOR stories that CNN seems unable to talk about! However they can talk about the weather! LOL......
Look, I like the carefree tone of this column, I do–but I'm disgusted by the sentence "no one knows why she took the plunge." If this woman was trying to die by suicide, this sentence makes it seem like no big deal and trivializes the situation to a sickening degree. Please revise. Suicide affects tens of thousands of people every year.

Unemployment is lower than its been years. Its not perfect but its better than where we were under Bush.

I am still waiting for CNN to cover the story of the millions of dollars that the Koch Brothers have spent to sabotage the Affordable Care Act. That is actually a NEWS story, and not the repetitive drumbeat of Tea Party Talking points attacking the President CNN has chosen to focus upon. This is, indeed, shabby "journalism."
He will be the same great President that he is right now when he goes back up in the polls.
60% of Americans have no clue of the difference between a manager and a leader, and couldn't lead a horse to water in a desert. Trust me when I say I don't care one whit about this "poll". To judge Obama as a manager or leader you have to understand what the words mean.
Manager? Leader? Well, Obama CLEARLY couldn't MANAGE to get a Web site up and running. He can't seem to MANAGE to get the young and healthy to sign up? He LEAD the American people along with some lies about "if you like your plan." And now no one trusts him because he's a POOR MANAGER and LYING LEADER.
Iran cannot be trusted, period. History has already proven that out. Nuclear weapons are dangerous business and that is what Iran secretly wants. Dont make agreements with them that cannot be monitored carefully.
