Purple Heart recipient and retired Army Veteran JR Martinez stopped by "New Day" Monday to talk to Chris Cuomo about helping veterans make progress and his new book "Full of Heart: My Story of Survival, Strength and Spirit."
The actor and former "Dancing With The Stars" champion reminds viewers he was serving in Iraq when his car ran over a landmine. He was trapped in the car for five minutes and sustained burns throughout 34 percent of his body.
Martinez emphasizes for veterans trying to move forward:
"I had no idea what I was going to do with my life. Let alone a career, I was never going to be able to go back to the military, that was taken away from me. But do you know what really helped me? Is I got an opportunity. I got a chance. And as a vet, I'm representing all the vets that exist in this country, and I'm saying 'listen, all we want is an opportunity.'"
