Looking for progress in the government shutdown stalemate, New York police arrest one of their own in SUV-biker beating, and dad says Las Vegas plane boy is no angel.
It's Wednesday, and here are the “5 Things to Know for Your New Day."
Every weekday morning around 6, we’ll hit the top five stories of the day, clue you in on a few other buzzy items, and let you know about some of the must-watch stories coming up on CNN’s morning show, “New Day.”
1. GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN
Obama's offer: It's not much, but maybe it's a start. President Obama says he's ready to talk to the Republicans on their own terms, but first they have to end the government shutdown and raise the debt ceiling. Well, maybe not exactly on the GOP's terms. House Speaker John Boehner says that sounds a little too much like "unconditional surrender." Still, Boehner says he's "hopeful" top Republicans and Democrats can begin a "conversation" sometime soon.
Brianna Keilar is live all morning long on the government shutdown and debt limit stalemate. Christine Romans joins "New Day" at 6 and 7 to talk about how the shutdown is making big business grumpy. CNN political commentator Ana Navarro and Marc Lamont Hill of Columbia University enter the fray at 7. Republican Sen. Tom Coburn of Oklahoma is on at 8.
2. SUV DRIVER ATTACK
Off-duty officer arrest: A New York police officer is the sixth person to be charged in connection with an attack on an SUV driver last month. Wojciech Braszczok is allegedly shown in a video pounding on a Range Rover driven by Alexian Lien, who was later beaten. Braszczok was off-duty at the time and riding with a group of motorcyclists. It's not clear if he took part in the beating. The officer faces riot and criminal mischief charges. Both are felonies.

3. MAT DEATH MYSTERY
Foul play or tragic accident?: These are the questions surrounding the death of 17-year-old Kendrick Johnson, who medical examiners say suffocated in January after getting stuck in a rolled up gym mat. A former FBI agent who looked at death scene images obtained by CNN says he thinks it was foul play. In September, the Justice Department said it wouldn't open a civil rights investigation into Johnson's death, but federal prosecutors are now reviewing the case to see if a separate investigation is needed. Johnson's father says someone murdered his son and should be in jail.

4. VEGAS PLANE BOY
No angel: That 9-year-old Minnesota boy who slipped through security and hopped into a flight to Las Vegas without a ticket or boarding pass has a history. Let's just say that child protection investigators are already familiar with him. The Minneapolis Star Tribune reports he recently stole a car and also mixed in with a large family to slip into a local water park without paying. His dad says his son is no angel. And add this to the mix, his mom works at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport where he boarded the Delta flight to Sin City. Investigators still have a few dots to connect in this case.
George Howell joins "New Day" at 7 and 8.
5. SALMONELLA OUTBREAK
Chicken out: The USDA traces a salmonella outbreak to a poultry producer in California. So far, it's sickened 278 people in 18 states. The CDC is working with state health departments to track the outbreak while the investigation continues, but because of the government shutdown, the information may not make it to the agencies' websites. Oh well, you're hearing it here.
Elizabeth Cohen is on at 6 and 7 with more details.
Those are your five biggies for the day. Here are a few others that are brewing and have the Internet buzzing.
- There are worse ways to go: Have you heard about the antechinus? He's a frisky little marsupial that's going to have sex, if it's the last thing he does. And it is!
- Nonessential Nobel: What a difference a year makes. Last year, physicist David Wineland with the National Institute of Standards and Technology won the Nobel Prize in physics. This year, he's just another "nonessential" government employee on furlough during the government shutdown. One man's ground-breaking scientist is another man's expendable worker. But, not to worry, exclusive gyms for members of Congress remain open. They're considered "essential."
- Shutdown song: How 'bout a little protest music to go with your government shutdown. Born during the country's political upheaval in the late 1960s, Chicago returns to its hippy roots, taking a swipe at Washington in "America," its new song. "Don't expect our leaders to show us how; They don't have a clue what to do," the tune says.
- Bubble blast: Bubbles, lights and a slow-motion camera. What's not to like?
- Jimmy Chew?: What do you do when your dog turns your $200 Cole Haan wingtips into a chew toy? You turn him into a budding artist and sell his work on eBay. Listen to this sales pitch: "Introducing Half-Chewed Cole Haan Wingtip by the emerging canine artist, Jack. This unique presentation of a meticulously destroyed dress shoe is the first of its kind by Jack." Bid now, while you still can.
There you go. All you need to know to get an early start to your morning.
Be sure to tune in to "New Day" from 6 to 9 a.m. ET. Join us at NewDayCNN.com and go and have a GREAT NEW DAY!
Chicago's new song, "America," did not take them back to the "hippy roots." It took them back to the days when the times and situations in our country drove them to write songs to reach the people and address the "upheaval" of the day. "America," is no different. They are one of the longest-lived and successful bands of modern music and one of the few who never shied away from incorporating American life into their music.
Chicago's song "America" captures my sentiments about our government. No, our leaders don't know what to do and that's why the tough decisions aren't being made on debt reduction and entitlement, immigration and tax reform. Watched a passionate 30-minute speech by Senator Coburn last night about the cowardice and lack of leadership in the White House and Congress to solve these pressing issues. They're too worried about political posturing and the next election and not with doing the right thing for Americans. We've already reached a tipping point and if we don't turn back the tide now, future generations will suffer. Make your voices heard America!
@rickyricardo- I agree w/ you & NO HOLIDAY PARTIES 4 all parties of Congress! This is not a celebratory X 4 the American people. Hope Hagel gets an earful @ Dover AF Base from the families of Fallen Heroes whose benefits are being w/held because of Boehner`s lack of b alls & diplomacy!
Quit exaggerating, humans! Only one of a pair of $200 shoes is chewed here = $100, *not* 200. And only one-half of that was eaten. So human dollars-wise, Master lost $50. And if he'd be patient, I'm sure recycling can minimize that loss. See, we're now down to dogdom amounts. What's all the fuss?. (P.S. Someone, buy him some foot powder, ok? If he can afford $200 shoes, surely he can afford something to lessen my being enticed by them.....)
It is a sad day in America when putting 800,000 people out of a job in this economy is done for political reasons! I am with former President Jimmy Carter when he said our Christian values no longer exist in our government. We increase funding for war and cut funding for food & health care for poor children. Is there not one Republican with a conscience?
It's time to cancel the National Christmas tree and all the White House Xmas decorations.
Good Morning CNN! Kendrick Johnson`s sad death was initially ruled accidental- until his family found his sneaker missing + Kendrick rolled- up in the gym mat w/ possible trauma. 10 months later this African-American family is still pleading 4 justice in the name of their son! Sounds so familiar? Just 4 the record I`m Caucasian. Boehner has little man syndrome allegedly & will not relent his baby bottle 4 the good of the American people & this country! Why doesn`t someone FIRE this clown & end this circus?! Snotfair! The adorable dog eating the Cole Hahn shoe gave me some comic-relief:) Also Congrats 2 the Boston Red Sox 4 winning the AL Championship Series! From last place last year 2 1st place this year! HAVE A GREAT & SAFE DAY CNN!
seriously funny the dog and the shoe DOG THERAPY
Did they try spanking the 9-year-old bad boy?
Jack is hilarious! what a great pic!
US Veterans forcibly removed from "closed" federal war memorial while hundreds of thousand spent on an undocumented immigrant rally in the "closed" National Mall in DC?!
The Obama Shutdown/Obama Sequester tactics = fight and die for your country, you get punished. Enter and stay in the country illegally, you get rewarded.
Where are the Obamacare enrollment stats?
