Bill Gates released the reins of Microsoft five years ago. But according to the New York Times, he's been seen hanging around the Seattle company more often lately, leading some employees to wonder if their old boss plans to return to work.
The timing of these "Gates sightings" at Microsoft is interesting – considering Steve Ballmer announced he’s retiring as CEO.
“He's on the search committee for a new CEO, so it makes sense that he'd be showing up. He’s going to probably try to help drive what kind of decision they make,” CNN Business Correspondent Christine Romans reports.
Romans says, “But a lot of people maybe harkening to the Steve Jobs era, when he left the company he founded and then came back and it sparked on this great explosion. So there's a lot of guessing going on around Mr. Gates."
Ironically enough, Reuters recently reported that with some major Microsoft shareholders want Gates out of the equation, “because they think he will be too involved–he will not give free rein to a CEO. And a new CEO needs free rein," Romans says.
Both Gates and Ballmer seem to take some freedoms imitating Austin Powers and Dr. Evil, respectively, in this old spoof video that has now gone viral.
