12-Year-Old Bear Attack Survivor Shares Her Story

Seven people have been attacked by bears in five states in less than a week. Twelve-year-old Abby Wetherell is one of them.

Wetherell was running in the woods near her grandparents' home in Northern Michigan when a black bear attacked her not once, but twice.

The young girl survived her “very terrifying” experience and is now resting assured the pain from her injuries will go away soon.

“I knew I was in trouble when I saw the bear charging after me, because I knew I wasn't going to be able to outrun the bear.”

She says she was far enough away from the cabin that she felt she wouldn’t be able to escape the animal.

“I was thinking I'm going to die, I'm not going to survive this.”

The bear caught up to the girl and attacked her once before going away for a moment. When she tried to run again, it attacked her a second time.

She says she even tried to pet it to calm it down, but that failed. The runner suffered deep cuts in her thighs as well as her back.

Elizabeth Wetherell says her daughter was running in a place she’s very familiar with, “and for her to get hurt out there like that, it was absolutely the scariest thing I've ever experienced in my life.”

In the end, playing dead was the best solution and the bear eventually left.

As for running in the woods again, Wetherell says “not alone, but I'll run on my road probably.”
