Welcome to the Friday edition of “5 Things to Know for Your New Day."
Every weekday morning around 6, we’ll hit the top five stories of the day, clue you in on a few other buzzy items, and let you know about some of the must-watch stories coming up on CNN’s new morning show, “New Day.”
1. EGYPT COUP
Brotherhood backlash: Supporters of deposed Egyptian President Mohamed Morsy are planning to take to the streets today, calling it a “Friday of Rejection.” The Muslim Brotherhood, which is not in the mood for fence-mending in this splintered country, says the military has stolen power from its elected leader. The big question: Does democracy still have a chance in Egypt?
Reza Sayah will report from the streets of Cairo all morning with the latest developments. And Rana Foroohar will join us at 7 to discuss how the unrest will affect oil prices worldwide
2. ZIMMERMAN TRIAL
Emotional day ahead: The judge has ruled that voice recording experts cannot testify at the trial. But she has left the door open for someone more familiar with the voices on the 911 call to identify who is yelling. We expect Trayvon Martin’s mother to take the stand, and Sybrina Fulton likely will be asked if that is her son calling out for help. It’s a critical issue for the prosecution, which is nearing the end of its case.
George Howell will preview the day’s events live from Sanford, Florida, at 6 and 7.
3. SEARCH FOR BRITISH GIRL
Hope for Maddie: She’s been missing for six years now. And British police still believe little Madeleine McCann might be alive. So much so they are sending out investigators to look into 12 UK nationals and 26 other Europeans. Her parents - both doctors - have never stopped looking for their daughter, who was almost 4 years old when she disappeared.
Atika Shubert is in London where Scotland Yard has new leads it wants to pursue
4. SAVED FROM A SINKHOLE
911, a car just fell through the street: We’ve all hit a pothole in the road and worried we messed up our car, but how many of us have been swallowed by a sinkhole? Well, Pamela Knox has. She and her car recently fell 20 feet through a hole in the street, but she had her faith, which she credits for her rescue. She joins us at 7 for an exclusive chat about her ordeal.
5. MANDELA'S HEALTH
Lecture from a legend: The Mandela family got a public smackdown in its public family squabble. Desmond Tutu, the legendary South African archbishop, reminded the Mandelas that their anguish is the nation's anguish So stop fighting over the burial of three of Nelson Mandela's children, he said. As the family fights, the anti-apartheid icon lies critically ill in a hospital.
Robyn Curnow is in Pretoria and will have the most recent update on Mandela's condition.
Those are your five biggies for the day. Here are a couple of others that are brewing and have the Internet buzzing.
- Taking the plunge: Bride-to-be Becki Salmon was patiently posing for engagement photos with her beloved by a Philadelphia-area creek when a little boy splashed into the water. The bad news for the kid? The water was much higher than usual due to all the recent rains. The good news? Becki is a paramedic, and even better, a lifeguard. Made for some memorable photos, but not like she and fiancé Matt Werner had imagined.
- How about a No. 12 instead?: The New England Patriots are doing everything they can to distance themselves from murder suspect Aaron Hernandez. Now they are telling people if they want to bring their No. 81 jerseys in to swap for another player’s uniform top, they can trade this weekend. But considering the bids for some shirts, fans might be tempted to sell them on eBay instead.

- Bullies caught on video: So much for tolerance. Street preachers at a gay pride festival were assaulted by two men after being profanely asked to leave by others who objected to their presence. But like most public events, there were plenty of cameras to document the confrontation and play witness for the police. Warning: the video contains profanity and a fight.
- Labor intensive: Irish radio host Henry McKean went to Amsterdam where he was hooked up to a machine that recreates the pain of childbirth. Turns out – it’s not pleasant.
- They want to believe: Lots of fun stuff this weekend in Roswell, New Mexico. There's a 10K race, a carnival for the kids, symposiums on alien abductions. Wait, say what? The annual Roswell UFO Festival starts today in the town where more than 60 years ago, an object crashed, setting off decades of disputes and claims of a government coverup. Because if there was a place aliens would be scouting ...
There you go. All you need to know to get an early start to your morning.
Be sure to tune in to "New Day," from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. ET, join us at CNN.com/NewDay and go and have a GREAT NEW DAY
I like this, it's more or less like paraphrasing all of cnn news of the day in a clear and simple way, keep it up buddies!!!
I think your New Day would be a lot better if you drop the banners on the screen when showing a video pertaining to a story. Someone must be asleep in the control room.
WTG Becki! Awesome save.
"We expect Trayvon Martin’s mother to take the stand, and Sybrina Fulton likely will be asked if that is her son calling out for help. It’s a critical issue for the prosecution, which is nearing the end of its case."
Despite pretty much everyone agreeing that the voice is NOT Trayvon's, do you really think the mother is going to say it isn't? Especially being 'critical' to the prosecutions already weak, reasonable doubt filled trial?
Brawl at pride fest... So the gay pride fest was pushing for people to be tolerant of them, but they don't want to do the same? Hmm, sounds one sided to me!
Kool start. how'bout preview of weekend sports and entertainment -by US region. movies, rodeos golf, track, racing, X games, boxing, special events --–like whatever.....
If people can't go to a "we don't pay any taxes" church to openly complain about sermons, then preachers shouldn't be allowed to go out onto the street and openly tell strangers that their souls are doomed.
I like this feature – thanks for it. I thought the sinkhole story was funny. Not for what happened to the lady, but that she thanks God for her rescue. For all the terrible things that have happened in the history of civilization, some people still thank God when good things happen, but never blame Her/Him when bad things happen. If God is responsible for the good in the world, then why not the bad?
The credit for this woman's survival and safe rescue lies with luck, her positive attitude (which doesn't require theological leanings), and the team of people who helped her.
