Five Things to Know for Your New Day –Friday, March 14

There’s still no sign of the missing Malaysia Airlines plane. Crimea holds a historic referendum Sunday. And it's  Pi Day!

It’s Friday, and here are the 5 things to know for your New Day.

1. MISSING PLANE

From a chess board to a football field: That’s how one expert described the search for the missing Malaysia Airlines plane after clues emerged that it may have gone down in the Indian Ocean. That’s the opposite direction of the flight path. We’re on Day 6 now – and every lead so far has not yielded results. Meanwhile, we're learning more about the pilots of the doomed passenger jet.

2. UKRAINE CRISIS

Tick, tock, tick, talk: Crimea decides Sunday whether it wants to divorce Ukraine and get hitched to Russia. The West has told Russia, back off or face “significant consequences.” But Moscow’s not backing down.  There will be a ton of last-ditch diplomatic maneuverings today to take the heat down a notch.

3. PI DAY

Perfect equation for fun:  Do some math or bake a pie – totally up to you. Pi Day has become more than a celebration of the Greek letter “π.” It’s turned into a day to connect folks to math via food. While Pi isn’t that kind of pie, making it has become part of the day. So party like a … er science star!  What's more, Albert Einstein was born on March 14.

4. OSCAR PISTORIUS TRIAL

Accidental display: Another day in court with more gory details on Reeva Steenkamp 's killing? Sounds like it. The top cop on the scene the night Oscar Pistorius killed his girlfriend testifies today at the murder trial of the Olympic athlete. Former colonel G.S. van Rensburg first took the stand  yesterday with testimony that included police photos taken at Pistorius’ house after the killing. The sight of his dead girlfriend's wounds made Pistorius sick to his stomach — again.

5. RECORD-HIGH MILLIONAIRES

What financial crisis?: Looks like the rich have finally shaken off the recession.  The number of U.S. households with a net worth of $1 million or more rose to 9.63 million last year,  a new report shows. That's the highest number on record –  and more than a 600,000 leap up from 2012. And the state with the most millionaires? Maryland.

Those are your five biggies for the day. Here are a few others that are brewing and have the Internet buzzing.

Selfie power: Oh, what to do when you're evacuated from a plane? How about take a selfie? Yup, that's it.  Epic, but a few decades too late. Colin Powell takes the cake on this one. He was king of selfies long before you spring chicken joined the hype!

Will exercise for food: This is the kitty version of dangling a carrot. Cat on a moving treadmill tries to get food placed before it. Frustration ensues.

Just dance!:Guy who lost a bet has to dance in public. He gets joined by strangers, and it becomes a street party.

There you go. All you need to know to get an early start to your morning.

Could the lost plane be controlled by a flight simulator on the ground in some way such a drones are?

I am pretty sure DOOMED is appropriate. I do not think they landed on Gilligan's Island and are having cocktails at this time.

Everyone keeps saying "Doomed airliner". Do we know it is DOOMED? Seem to be drawing a conclusion. It is missing, but DOOMED we do not know.

The bar graph on number 5 should not have a dollar sign before the numbers. 9.6 millon households, not 9.6 million dollars
