UPDATE: Tune in to CNN's "New Day" from 6-9 a.m. ET, White House Press Secretary Jay Carney will discuss the government shutdown.
After Republicans and Democrats couldn't strike a deal on a spending bill Monday, the government closed shop at 12:01 a.m. Tuesday.
CNN's Christine Romans breaks down how a shutdown impacts you:

When will we start looking at the media spinning the news instead of reporting it?
How bad did Chris Cuomo look in his interview with the press secretary? Chris tried throughout the ENTIRE interview to put his peon two sense in on the matter. How about this scenario for the people, CNN and others listen up: Chris asks some necessary questions, helps inform the viewer, and leaves politics to the politicians. Did he really think Jay was going to say, "Hey Chris, you're right, the president is a big bully, we're sorry that republicans feel like they are losing their slimy grip on Washington and control of the economy". And when Jay didn't say that and argued that the president was right until he was blue in the face, Chris still tried to take the last word and put his pathetic media spin on the conversation. Shame on you CNN, Chris Cuomo, and all of the media. We deserve better press than this.
Disappointed in Cuomo interview of Press Secretary; did not seem he understood the wide range impact of Congress' actions. I know he is a well educated man, so I was confused as to what appeared to be his inability to comprehend.
The Republicans want to go to conference? Before the Affordable Care Act was passed it went to conference. It is done, over, closed,...how many more words do I need to find for them to get it. Simply because Republicans don't like it doesn't mean the Democrats haven't already compromised. This is ridiculous and then media allows people like Rand Paul and Daryl Issa to come on programs and share a slant that doesn't hold water. Get over yourselves....you lost the vote on the Affordable Care Act it is law already!!!!! Vote to pass the CR and stop acting like an upper class bunch of twits who can talk above the masses. We get it...we are all at work....enjoy your $174,000 a year....for honing your ability to not answer questions. Job in Congress = Only Job in the World Where You Can Lie and Tell Half Truths & Still Have a Job!!!!!!!!
I keep hearing he won't compromise. What they mean is we want our way or we won't play. Looks like kids having a temper tantrum that is impacting the very people who put then there! They are still getting their paycheck. Why? If the voters who now can't go to work won't get paid then these "children" should not get paid. Let them use their pay checks to pay the workers, open the national parks. They should be ashamed and we can only hope the voters pay them back accordingly when it's election time!
Holding the American people hostage is an act of desperation. We really need to look at the motives behind this ridiculous shut-down. This is not a government for the people, it is a government of personal gain, posturing and manipulation. We have always kept a certain amount of greed and power in check, but no more. Repubicans and Democrats are equally to blame. There is enough waste in the Federal government to fund ObamaCare and beyond. the protectionist attitudes of Washington Bureaucrats may prove Thomas Jefferson right after all.!
Why do we continue to vote these so called leaders into office? They are getting paid to have news conferences and take vacations. The government shuts down and our troops don’t know if they will get paid in two weeks. But the Congress does not have that problem, because they get a check regardless. Our lawmakers have not done anything in years but we continue to vote them into office. They should all be fired and start over with a new crew.
The should all be fired or at least NOT PAID like the rest of the NON-ESSENTIAL personnel.
Our "Leaders" are holding government employees hostage. The two issues should not be tied together. So if they continue the funding they lose their leverage against Obamacare. Call in the hostage negotiating team from the FBI to get these crooks to release the funding! And vote them OUT!
The Congress of the U.S. resembles a sibling fight between 8 yr. olds or a playground dispute between third graders regarding all the blaming: It's the President. It's Harry Reid. It's the Democrats. Bottom line is that it is a law and they need to be slapped once on the tush for this nonsense by making it a law that when government shuts down, THEY will not be paid, either. There are bullies in the Congress who are good models for conflict resolution training at its worst. What voters do with that information could well change where they work in the future.
Come Senators and Congressmen, please head the call, there is a major GROUNDSWELL raging, let's weed out hate and sow seeds of peace for the times they are a changing
It is a sad day when career politicians are forced to pander to the will of their biggest corporate contributors and ignore the needs and wishes of their constituents. The image of the mascot style Uncle Sam ads (thank you Koch brothers) was laughable at first, until you realize the far right fringe American Taliban (Jeff Daniels – "Newsroom" quote) was actually buying into the hype. Today is the 123rd anniversary of Yosemite National Park. A wonderful way to celebrate the occasion is to tell the park rangers and staff that the their jobs and careers are being held ransom by their elected officials that would rather listen to a corporate head of a pizza chain that refuses to provide healthcare for employees (because he would have to raise the cost of his pies by a nickel) than the single mother that works for one of his stores and spends 3 hours in a hospital E R waiting room when her child has a minor illness that could have been treated quickly in a physicians office (had she had the benefit of healthcare coverage). The 2014 election cannot arrive quickly enough...
The health care act is not fair across the board for everyone and it should be no exceptions. What is good for one is also good for our elected officials. The Republicans have stood up and are standing up for what the American people want unfortunately they will have a fight, hopefully they won't buckle.
Now I know why other countries overturn their government. Becuse if their government is anything like ours there is none.
Now it's time for the people to stand up. Let's unite and fire congress. What have they really done for us lately?
Maybe we the people shouldn't pay taxes until government is back up and running.
That may help stimulate the government to get something done.
The current partisan stand-off over Obamacare in Congress is made all the
more disconcerting after reviewing the 111th Congress' House vote on HR
HR 3590 was passed into law as the Patient Protection and Affordable Care
Act, aka Obamacare with 416 bipartisan Ayes and 16 No Votes.
It appears that the overwhelming Congressional support to pass this
resolution into law (Public Law No. 111-148) has been replaced by an
absence of will by some who initially supported it. Add to this the
Supreme Court's ruling that the provisions of the law are legal.
Petty gamesmanship demonstrates how out-of-touch some of our so called
lawmakers are with reality. Talking heads and non-stop fanning of the
fires by the corporate media have become the new entertainment industry in
Pollywood has overtaken Hollywood and Bollywood as the entertainment
capital of the World. Shameful.
If the Religious Rascist Radicals in Congress cause a shut down of The United States Government, they should be tried by the common people for treason and hung by their necks and then hung upside down so they look like the bats from hell they are. If we decide that isn't American, or is too 'mob mentality', then we need to think of something more norma,l like, um ... firing all the members of congress who voted to shut it own, and that would of course mean they don't get their pensions.
How irresponsible can the "Leaders" pf the most powerful nation in the world be. They know they are preparing to undermine the economy yet again with their self serving rhetoric. And they don't even come to work until 2 pm. They will continue to get paid a minimum of $172,000 a year while Joe Blow the blue collar worker has no health insurance and as a direct result of their bias no government offices to go to for any assistance. The LAW has been passed by both houses of the government and reviewed by the supreme court. I don't care what they think this is not the way to change it.
I believe that bill was passed in 2010 when the Democrats had super majorities in both houses. Not one Republican voted for it.
The President has already made changes to This Law with a stroke of his pen, no less than 5 times.
Is that the 'WAY' you want our laws changed? By one man, elected by the electorial college. or by 535 elected officials?
I could be wrong, but I don't think the Democrats had a 416 to 16 majority in the house. Fault should be on Republicans and Democrats alike. They need to come up with a compromise. Instead they spend more time grandstanding to the media and than working on a deal.
