5 Things to Know for Your New Day – Friday, August 23

Obama talks puppies and national security with “New Day,” Bradley Manning wants gender reassignment surgery and there's been another apparently random fatal attack by teens.

It’s Friday, and here are “5 Things to Know for Your New Day."

Every weekday morning around 6, we’ll hit the top five stories of the day, clue you in on a few other buzzy items, and let you know about some of the must-watch stories coming up on CNN’s new morning show, “New Day.”

1. OBAMA’s CNN EXCLUSIVE

So much to talk about:  We're on a roll here. First, we snag Prince William, then Mark Zuckerberg, now President Obama? This morning, you’ll see Chris Cuomo’s exclusive interview with the president. The commander-in-chief covers a lot of ground: from the bloody conflicts in Egypt and Syria, to the NSA, to college tuition, to the paralysis on the Hill.  Oh, and of course, Sunny, the newest first family pup!

We’ll have the full interview this morning at 6. Be sure to Tweet/Facebook us with your thoughts during the interview. https://www.facebook.com/NewDayCNNl

After you hear what the president has to say, a distinguished panel of CNN correspondents  will break it down for us: Jim Acosta, Arwa Damon and Nick Paton Walsh.

2. SCHOOL SHOOTING HERO

Tuff love: She was a picture of poise when she talked down a gunman who  barged into an Atlanta-area school this week.  She was emotional when, on “AC 360” last night,  she met the 911 dispatcher who was on the phone through the ordeal.  And she was all smiles when she got a call from President Obama thanking her.  We’ll let you in on a little secret: there might be a White House visit in Antoinette Tuff's future. (But for that, you have to watch the Obama interview!)

“I know everybody is safe, so I’m just trying to calm down emotionally on the inside. I appreciate you too, but I learned from the best … the best president in the world.” – Tuff to the president

We’re  also learning more about the alleged gunman. Last night, his brother told “Piers Morgan Live” that the suspect once set fire to the house while everyone was inside. And he once stood over his mom with a butcher knife. The brother said Michael Brandon Hill’s been institutionalized many times, but the system failed him.

Martin Savidge will join us live throughout the show with more details.

3. ANOTHER RANDOM KILLING

More bad news: Didn’t we just go through this?  This morning, we’re learning of another random killing by teens, this time in Spokane, Washington. An 88-year-old WW II vet was beaten to death by two teens outside his favorite pool lounge. The cops say they know of no motive; that the teens appeared to have picked Delbert Belton at random. The man served in the Pacific, took a bullet in the leg during the Battle of Okinawa. And he lost his life waiting for a friend – because he didn’t want her to walk home alone.

Meanwhile, we’re getting even more chilling details about Christopher Lane’s thrill killing. He’s the Australian baseball player gunned down in Oklahoma. “It’s time to start taken (sic) lives” – that’s what one of the suspects tweeted days earlier. Back in April, he tweeted, "90% of white ppl (people) are nasty. #HATE THEM."

"It's really depressing. Seems that all there is is bad news." – Delbert Belton’s friend about the killings.

Michaela Pereira will have more on Delbert Belton’s killing at 6 and 7.

4. BRADLEY MANNING

Chelsea lately:  He was Bradley Manning. Now, he wants to be referred to as Chelsea. He says he wants to begin hormone therapy as soon as possible  and “I hope you’ll support me.” Not gonna happen, the Army says.  During his 35-year sentence for leaking classified military info, Manning will get to see psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers and behavioral experts. But, in the eyes of the  Army, he’ll  remain a man, an official said.  Human rights groups are not happy.

At 8, we’ll talk to Chris Lawrence about what the future holds for Manning.

5. BOB FILNER

Deal or no deal: Set your clock for 4 p.m. ET.  That’s when the San Diego city council meets behind closed doors to decide what it should do about San Diego Mayor Bob Filner. Apparently, he’s ready to resign if city officials accept a mediation agreement he’s proposed. We don’t know what’s in the agreement. No one’s talking. But we’re sure the city’ll be happy to put this sexual harassment scandal behind it.

At 8, CNN’s Kyung Lah joins us with the very latest on what Filner’s resignation could mean to his accusers and to the city.

Those are your five biggies for the day. Here are a couple of others that are brewing and have the Internet buzzing.

Holy mismatched casting! It's Ben Affleck: The Oscar-winning actor will star in the “Man of Steel” sequel. Tweeters are going nuts – and not in a good way. Their worries may be a little justified. His Daredevil stint was a major flop. Plus he was just getting his movie street cred back from yet another disaster, Gigli. But man, the tweets have been brutal.

There’s even a petition on change.org to remove him from the role. "He's not built, nor is he intimidating enough for the role of Batman,” it says. Oy.

- Sense and sensibility : If we were acquitted of murder in an unarmed teen’s shooting, we’d wait a while before we headed off to a gun maker and pose for a picture. But that’s just us. George Zimmerman, who was found not guilty in the Trayvon Martin shooting, did just that. And not just any gun maker, but Kel-Tec.  You know, the folks who make the PF-9, the same type of gun Zimmerman used to shoot Martin? His lawyer says Zimmerman’s worried about his safety.

–That one’s gotta hurt: Here’s a PSA, kids: Don’t speed on your motorbike. And WATCH OUT FOR BEARS!!!! Or else, this will happen. The driver was hurt, but not too bad. The bear? It just sauntered away.

–The cat’s meow: Tomorrow’s Caturday. And when you’re feeling the pressure to post your own awesome cat video, feel free to use this. It’s a cat puppet crooning Journey’s ‘Don’t stop believin’ – featuring a cameo by a real cat! Don’t say we never do anything for ya.

There you go. All you need to know to get an early start to your morning.

Be sure to tune in to "New Day," from 6 to 9 a.m. ET, join us at NewDayCNN.com and go and have a GREAT NEW DAY!

If Oklahoma doesn't charge Chris Lane's murder as a hate crime, then this word is too effed up to keep spinning. I might become a "community activist" myself. RIP one of the Greatest Generation, Delbert Benton. I have a feeling this is going to be just as ugly. Love Antoinette Tuff. Everyone needs a friend who will tell it to you straight and she's as real and as brave as it gets. Affleck as Batman???? I'm only going to watch the Superman scenes.......on CABLE. Batman is in Europe with Cat Woman, living a happy life in the disguise of Christian Bale. I will accept no one else. And Piers you piece of cr@p.....Has it occurred to you that Zimmerman wouldn't have NEEDED an new gun has Florida returned his original gun back to him after his acquittal as was required by law? Any by the way, Obama, if you had a son, would he "look like" Chris Lane and Delbert Benton's "alleged" killers?" Your selective silence is DEAFENING.

Ben Affleck wasn't bad in Daredevil. In fact he was good. I thought he did well with what he was given. It's just that what he was given was garbage. It would be like ragging on Peter O'Toole for Supergirl. Peter O'Toole is always excellent. It was Supergirl that was a stinking, steaming pile of excrement.

And Richard Dreyfuss' comment was priceless.

It is my hope that President Obama- who I voted for- will call the family of Australian Chris Lane who was gunned-down by 2 African Americans because they were bored! Consistency in the response 2 tragedies no matter the race is key 2 achieving The Dream of Martin Luther King! CNN? Thank you 4 asking the question if possible. My New England Patriots stomped-on squashed by Detroit 40-9!? last night. I THINK Tebow s/b cut. Antoinette is a true hero & what a great teacher she would be in our juvenile penetentiaries! Have a Great & Safe Day CNN!

You are on point. MLK was about the civil rights of all people. He would have been appalled by the Chris Lane (and now it appears, Delbert Benton) tragedies.
