5 Things to Know for Your New Day – Friday, July 19th, 2013

Welcome to the Friday edition of “5 Things to Know for Your New Day."

Every weekday morning around 6, we’ll hit the top five stories of the day, clue you in on a few other buzzy items, and let you know about some of the must-watch stories coming up on CNN’s new morning show, “New Day,” with Chris Cuomo, Kate Bolduan and Michaela Pereira.

1. TRAYVON MARTIN’S PARENTS

Stunned by acquittal: We finally heard from Trayvon Martin's parents for the first time since George Zimmerman was found not guilty. And they say the verdict was shocking and unexpected. “Does the system work? It didn't work for us," Trayvon's father, Tracy, told "AC 360" last night. Meanwhile, protesters who want Florida to nix its "stand your ground" law say they'll continue to camp out at the state Capitol - even though the governor has said he's not going to call a special session to do it.  And the Justice Department has asked Sanford police to hold all the evidence related to the case. What does this mean? We don't know.

John Zarrella will have more updates throughout the show. We'll also replay part of the parents' interview  all morning.

2. HEATWAVE

Stormy end: The Midwest will finally get some relief from the heat today. But don’t bring out the bubbly just yet. A cold front will sweep into the area, but it will also bring severe thunderstorms and some tornadoes.  You folks in the Northeast? You'll be sweating through an extra day of heat today before a cooler front hits tomorrow.
Some folks  on Twitter are having fun with the #heatwave hashtag

Indra Petersons will be live with the latest all morning.

3. DZHOKHAR TSARNAEV

The not-so-glamorous shots: Earlier this week, a Rolling Stone cover showed the Boston bombing suspect, tousle-haired and sultry-eyed, staring intently into the camera. Well, a police photographer who called that photo "an insult" released his own batch  yesterday.  His show Dzhokhar Tsarnaev coming out of the boat that cops found him hiding in. His face is smeared with blood; his forehead's glowing red from the laser of a sniper rifle. The police photog says they show "the real Boston bomber." The Massachusetts State Police is not happy. They say they didn't OK the pictures to be released.

Jason Carroll is live with the latest all morning.

4. ROYAL BABY WATCH

Hospital switcheroo?: The lil’ tot is not here yet, but paranoia is already setting in. Is the world's media camped outside the wrong hospital? A British newspaper says a contingency plan is in place for the duchess to give birth at a hospital in Reading, if she goes into labor while staying at her parents' home.  Then there’s St. Mary's Hospital in London, about 40 miles away, where everyone expects her to deliver. Prince William can handle a last-minute change – he’s a helicopter pilot and whatnot. Add the hospital to the other list of unknowns:  Due date, boy or girl, name …

Meanwhile, in keeping up with the times, there’s an app for that …

Max Foster will bring us the latest in the 6 o'clock hour.

5. DETROIT BANKRUPTCY

We're broke: Sinking under billions of dollars in debt, the city filed for bankruptcy yesterday, making it the largest U.S. municipal to do so.  The move could slash pension benefits to city workers and retirees, and leave bond holders with only pennies on the dollar. Public workers are sure to demand that the city not be allowed to walk away from obligations made to employees and retirees.

Poppy Harlow will bring us the latest in the 6 and 7 o'clock hours

Those are your five biggies for the day. Here are a couple of others that are brewing and have the Internet buzzing.

Mean mower, indeed:  With a speed of over 130 mph, this ain't your granddaddy’s lawn mower. Honda says its new mower can go from 0-60 in four seconds.  But don’t expect to go all Flash Gordon on your lawn … the so-called mean machine cuts grass at around 15 mph.

Fire at fireworks factory: A fireworks factory is probably among the last places a fire crew wants to tackle. But they were forced to do just that Wednesday in Rochester, Indiana. Thankfully, no one was in the building and no one was hurt. But the sky lit up with plumes of flames and flashes of fireworks.  (Warning: The video has foul language.)

Beat of his own drum: What's up with these Canadian drummers? You thought Rush's Neil Peart was awesome. Well, check out Tom Grosset. He can hit 1,208 single strokes in 60 seconds. That's about 20 smacks on the skins in one second!!!! He’s so fast, the folks over at World’s Fastest Drummer say he set a record.

There you go. All you need to know to get an early start to your morning.

Be sure to tune in to "New Day," from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. ET, join us at CNN.com/NewDay and go and have a GREAT NEW DAY

We were delighted to see Michaela later in the morning on CNN today. Someone has decided to write off the entire Western United States by only showing "New Day" from 3am to 6am in our time zone – without the courtesy of updated repeats during the same 6-9am as the eastern states. I'm getting weary of DVRing the show every day and then finding the time to watch it during the day or evening. Today, we were surprised and pleased to see Michaela during the hours we used to see her for so many years in Los Angeles. Since she is the most interesting and articulate person on "New Day", I hope CNN will find her a better show and a better time slot. By the way...I'm sure Kate Bolduan is a talented and intelligent young woman, but she talks entirely too fast to be delivering news. Chris Cuomo is great on the program but sometimes seems uncomfortable with the format...how about featuring Chris and Michaela??

Out of all of these important stories, as of 8:52 Central time, all 28 comments are correcting the name of Rush's drummer. Wow, so that's the only thing that caught anyone's attention out of all of those stories.

The system partially worked in the Martin/Zimmerman case.
-Zimmerman should of NEVER been charged! The cops, police chief and DA did not prosecute or arrest Zimmerman, because they had NO evidence. System did not work
-Zimmerman had a trail, the prosecution, presented its case, sent it to the jury and they found NO evidence to convict. and found him NOT GUILTY! System Worked.

Somebody gave that drummer 5 cups of coffee and told him is mother-in-law was coming by for a visit. My hands would shake like that too!

Rush has a drummer named Neil Peart, Geddy Lee is the vocalist/bass.

The drummer for Rush is Neil Peart, not Geddy Lee.

Yes, Geddy Lee is a great musician. But he is not the drummer in Rush! Neal Peart is the drummer.

Rush's drummer is Niel Peart...Geddy Lee is the lead singer/bassist. You guys should probably check the work of your summer interns.

Oh, if only I could blame it on an intern :). The mistake was mine. It's fixed while I eat some crow!

"You thought Rush's Geddy Lee was awesome." I think you meant Neil Peart. Geddy is the bassist/vocalist/keyboardist.

Neal Peart! Geddy is the bass/singer.

"You thought Rush's Geddy Lee was awesome. Well, check out Tom Grosset"

Neil Peart, the guy who plays drums for Rush, would probably do better then the bass player.

Rush's Geddy Lee IS awesome, but I'm not sure that reference is appropriate considering (in addition to singing) he predominantly plays bass and keyboards. I'm sure you meant to say Rush's Neil Peart.

Geddy Lee is a bass player not a drummer. Rush's drummer is Neil Peart.

FYI....regarding the story below. Neil Peart is the drummer from Rush. Geddy Lee is the lead singer.
