George Zimmerman’s defense attorney Mark O’Mara spoke to CNN Anchor Chris Cuomo about the public’s reaction to the not-guilty verdict, if Zimmerman regrets killing Trayvon Martin, Florida’s ‘Stand Your Ground’ law and racial profiling.
“… George had an absolute right to be where he was and he had a right to see where Trayvon Martin was,” O’Mara says. “People want to say it was improper profiling, but the reality is I think George had a reason to be concerned. It was Trayvon Martin who was the aggressor, at least by the forensic evidence, because Trayvon Martin did not receive any injuries, but the gunshot 45 seconds after George Zimmerman was screaming for help. So I understand people's frustrations, but it would seem to be that Trayvon Martin overreacted to what he perceived to be something going on, and he overreacted in a violent way.”
Later in the interview, O’Mara defends self-defense claim.
Sorry that happened to her. Was her assailant caught and prosecuted? What was the verdict? Does her assailant having a hood on make all African-American/Blacks wearing a hood BAD?
It is amazing to me how many people misquote the facts that were proven in court. Weren't these posters watching the trial?
Mark O'mara says Zimmerman had the right to be where he was. How can that be, when he was told to STAY IN HIS CAR until the police arrived and DISOBEYED leading to the tragic events that happened. If he hadn't disobeyed that command he would have been in the car. He had a right to stay in the car, not to confront the teenager! Will he be promoted to police officer now?
Martina, what you say is simply wrong: the dispatcher told him he did no have to follow him. He did not order him not follow or not get out of the car. I understand that CNN continues this factual error in reports, as Chris did above, but the jury had the actual language of the dispatcher before them.
@martina martini ... GZ was not in his truck when the dispatcher told him not to follow TM & GZ said OK. It's one of the biggest mis-understanding to assume that: 1) GZ was in the truck when dispatcher told him not to follow TM and 2) GZ continued to follow TM instead of he tried to come back to his truck.
So please stop saying "GZ was told not to follow but he disobey it".
And I am not saying that GZ was morally (not legally) not guilty .... but any rule applies to both sides. Yes, unfortunately TM was killed that night, but, it could have been GZ's life too in dangerous. A person would die when he/she receives significant blows to his head (& nose is part of the head too). Would it be better if GZ was the one who died? NO, of course not, any live-loss is a tragedy. It just happened this time is a black/africa American got killed. But we know in reality other skin-colors got killed too but another skin-colors & when are the hysteria?
And stop calling GZ a white-Hispanic. US is proud to elect its 1st black president & they have been calling the president as the black American, even though they know that his mother was white. Why the same rule doesn't apply to GZ? His father is white & his mother is Peruvian? If GZ is white-Hispanic, then Mr. Obama is white-African. So only those who is ready to call Mr. Obama a white-African, can call GZ a white-Hispanic. This should includes medias.
my comment was based on what I heard CNN report and from what i've read in the Corriere Della Sera newspaper of Milan, Italy, where I live. Obviously both sources were wrong. i stand corrected.
If I saw someone walking in the rain in a neighborhood that had been terrorized by burglaries, I too would have been suspicious. Add to that, Martin was near houses and potentially looking in windows as it appeared he was and you have even more suspicion.
Zimmerman followed Martin in his car to keep an eye on him until police could get there. Martin ran (Zimmerman and Martin's friend on the phone said so) and had 4 mins to make it to his house with a very substantial head start on Zimmerman. Zimmerman going to the "T" to see if Martin was still visible or even to ask him what he was doing was not committing a crime.
What happened to start the physical part of the fight is unknown. Even the friend of Martin on the phone can not say who threw the first blow. What we do know is that Zimmerman had injuries and Martin did not apparently have any.
What happened next is unknown but we do know someone was screaming for their life for 45 seconds. During these 45 seconds Zimmerman suffered additional injuries. Whose voice is uncertain. Zimmerman immediately said it was his. The eyewitness said it was his. His family and friends said it was his. Versus Martin's dad and brother who originally said they didn't know or that it was not Martin's and his mother who said it was Martin's voice screaming. You decide, but it would seem that it is most likely Zimmerman screaming.
Then you have the law. Self defense is warranted if you have reasonable belief your life or great bodily harm is in danger. Having been hit repeatedly and potentially screaming for help for 45 seconds and (most likely) trying everything in your power to get an unknown guy off you, who seems to be at a physical advantage over you and seemingly using the concrete to try to injure you....wouldn't you start thinking your only option is to pull your firearm? Add to that, that you think he may have seen it and possibly said 'your going to die tonight'? I'd shoot him I do believe as well. You don't know where the next blow is going to land and what damage it is going to do. You don't know when help will arrive. People can die from single blows...after 45 seconds it is only a matter of time. You don't know the person who is hitting you, or when he may stop (if he stops).
Ever of the the case around 1969, a movie was made about it "Cornbread, Earl and Me. this is so similar that it is scary.
II am a little concerned about the retired United States Air Force member who is now working in Law Enforcement. His comment about blacks killing blacks but are only concerned about whites killing blacks is somewhat understandable but his remarks about THESE people have sunk so low to devalue their own existence is lumping everyone in the black race together and showing his opinion of blacks Does he feel the same about all ethnic groups?. It worries me that he is in Law enforcement with that attitude while the statement about the school shootings goes unaddressed. Killing is WRONG no matter what race is doing it. God created us all and if anyone believes they are going to heaven, they better learn to accept and get along with ALL of God's creation because their is no segregation in heaven. For all anyone knows God might be White,Asian,Black,Native etc. The bible does state Thou shalt not KIll (Exodus chapter 20). He knows every heart and reads every mind. We may fool others but God can not be fooled. It also states in the bible " be not deceived God will not be mocked for whatever a man sows (does) that will he also reap. Do bad receive bad, do good receive good. Only God knows and He is the true judge. (Galatians 6:7 God help us and bless us! I know, some people do not bSome people have to see before they believe and the only thing wrong with this subject is that once there, there is no leaving. So, as my pastor said, "it is too late.
Chris Cuomo should be ashamed of the questions he asked the brother and lawyer of George Zimmerman about morals.
Chris Cuomo's coverage of this case has been abysmal. There is absolutely no semblance of "objective reporting" - he, and others at CNN, have a a biased objective and it shows in every question they ask. George Zimmerman's brother was a great interviewee who was not intiminated by Cuomo for one second - he hit it out of the park. Mr. Cuomo should spend time explaining to his audience all of the reasons why a defense verdict was inevitable given the evidence presented at trial. The jury found reasonable doubt and rendered a completely justified not guilty verdict. Mr. Cuomo should stop trying to get a "do over" by his biased questioning of every person he interviews.
The Government should terminate all police officers jobs & close all police stations in Florida, the people do not need them anymore because WE the people can protect ourselves with ( STAND YOUR GROUND LAW ).
NO JUSTICE FOR TRAY. Did Mark O'Mara ever stop and think that the 4 minutes George did not see Trayvon that he was hiding from
George. and he thought it was safe to come out to make his way home and that's when George decided to kill him
George started the fight, because the first move was made by him when he assumed that Trayvon was up to no good and started following him. (THAT’S THE FIRST MOVE) Also, when did the cry for help stop? when George fire the shot. If it was George crying for help it should have continued because he just shot someone so he should off been terrified calling 911. ( Trayvon stop crying for HELP because he fell to the ground took his last breath and die).
To your comment that the yelling stopped with the shot proves that Trayvon was yelling for help:
It is more likely that GZ was yelling for help. A witness placed GZ on bottom when the yelling was heard. GZ had injuries indicating a beating while TM had no injuries besides the gunshot wound. The simple explanation pointed to by all the evidence is that GZ no longer felt a need to yell once the beating stopped.
Mr. O'Mara missed the boat. GZ could have "kept an eye on" Travon simply by staying in his vehicle and driving around the neighborhood. Noooooo! He wanted to be a "hotshot"....the little wuz carring a big gun!!!!! What kind of odds are those? This will never go away, simply because it was so WRONG for GZ to do what he did. He could have just pointed the gun and said "get off", couldn't he? I'm sorry, GZ got off scot free!
To your response. I am a "black" Registered nurse in North Carolina and I do agree that we kill each other every day and every day we are sentenced and have to PAY for our crimes. My "black" family is successful and NO ONE has ever been arrested for Murder, Drugs, etc. I think it is unfair to profile anyone. Would it be fair for me to profile young white men, because majority school shootings are done by young white men. It would be unfair for me to profile your children so why should ours be profiled. With you being in Law Enforcement you should be ethical and treat everyone the same. I am in nursing and see all of my patients as one. When in America need to come together for what is right. It was wrong to kill a innocent child. He had his life ahead of him like all the children whom died in school shootings. Have a blessed day.
I am a retired United States Air Force member. I am presently working in Law Enforcement.
You know what amazes me about the black people who have been interviewed on this new station and many others, is the fact that blacks are being murdered daily in American by other black, and this fact is not to a concern to them, their only concern is that a non-black man by defending himself in the process killed his attacker. The fact that we as a people accept the murdering of each other is a very sickening situation, because these people have sunk so low to devalue their own existence. I believe that Mr. Zimmerman did the right thing by defending himself.
I am amazed at the ignorance portrayed by your statement and to add insult to injury your someone who is supposed to up hold the law. African Americans/Blacks are not forgetting the many race on race crimes...we are upset that this child was profiled and killed for doing nothing, but walking home in the rain! If someone was stalking you on a dark rainy night and you ran, hid, and they still followed YOU what would you have done? Mr. Zimmerman would not have had to defend himself if he had left that child alone. We value our existence and for you to make a blanket statement about our race is unfair and unjust. Our concern is this verdict has opened the door for similar situations...that's what's sickening.
It has already happened my dear when a black man deliberatly put his hood on and covered his face and glared at my sister in an attempt to scare her. That is the mentality! You are right, it is sickening.
