Update: Jennifer Carter, mother of Justin Carter, spoke to "New Day" Wednesday, July 3.
Justin Carter, the 19-year old teen charged with terroristic threat on Facebook, is on suicide watch after being jailed since February 14th. His father, Jack Carter, spoke to "New Day" to defend his son against the charges, while acknowledging that he understands why law enforcement had to investigate. Justin posted violent messages on Facebook, which his family described as sarcastic.
CNN Anchor Kate Bolduan pointed out that after every school shooting, people say that someone must have known something before the tragedy happened and asked Jack if this line of thinking applied to his son. “I definitely see the need to investigate such claims, absolutely,” Jack Carter said. “But, at some point during the investigation, there has to be some common sense.”
Later in the interview, he added, “He’s a good kid. He didn’t mean it. It was a joke. And he would never hurt anyone. He’s got younger siblings. And he’s good with children.”
The Carter family secured a law firm that will be working for Justin pro bono, and an online petition seeking his release has received over 33,000 signatures and counting.
Wow, it's quite obvious that American society has really flipped over the edge...I live overseas in a peaceful country, so the difference is really pronounced. US society is gripped by self-replicating fear and paranoia, which drives people and institutions to drastic over-reaction. Just amazing that even "normal" people don't realize that they are reacting crazy and adding to the paranoia.
While the kid's comments were in bad taste, when seen in the context of the original conversation, it is not close to anything of the caliber required for an arrest in a sane and civilized society.
Yes he is just a young adult but his comments hint at deeper psychological issues and/or anger which needs to be professionally treated. Truthfully he does not belong in the criminal justice system but he does belong under the care of a mental health professional who can help him deal with the issues which caused him to write such things which are indicative that he is not well. Also it appears he comes from a fragmented family and they have from a distant left him to his own devices when he is clearly not mature enough to be unsupervised.
overseas peaceful country? — don't you know that there IS no such thing anymore? every country is a not-peaceful country, eeeevvvvrrry body is a *threat to national security* doncha no? The NSA tells us so.
We living in a very sick world now, in todays day and age we are dealing with a lot of evil, REAL Terrorist out there running around cutting people's heads off. Terrorist blowing up events and killing innocent people. Then you have them Nanny watchers who jump at every opportunity to report and complain. I dont know how many times I have said, I am so angry I can just exploded , God please dont send the CIA or Border security to me as it is just something I say. You can't use the words blow up, explode or any word that is now considered a national threat. Poor child he must be going through hell as any bloody fool with half a brain could read between the lines and see he did not mean it. My question is what is a grow woman doing playing them foolish games? How did she come to see it? I fear for our kids growing up as they can no more have free speech or ever have the ability to be human. Robot controlled humans we will become
Common sense dictates that this kid's statement was sarcasm... they have no physical evidence that he was planning anything, weapons or otherwise other than this statement. Which would severely imply that whoever reported this took this completely out of context...
Also it's no secret that most kids these days online tend to be sarcastic... so what I want to know is how Mr. Roberts out there developed his bizarre conclusion that this kid is mentally disturbed by normal teenage gamer behavior. And honestly it makes me very concerned for the future of our children if someone like him has been evaluating them. I wonder how many kids he's talked into thinking that their normal individual thinking pattern is some form of insanity...
Yes the sarcasm was in bad taste, however anyone with common sense would be able to tell you that all this was was sarcasm in poor taste. This was not worth a kid being assaulted in prison, imprisoned with out right to an attorney or trial judged by his peers over a stupid mistake like this.
Last I checked this was America and there was something to protect it's citizens called "Human Rights."
It concerns me that common sense is so rare now a days... it really really makes me sad.
$10 says I get arrested for making this comment. It wouldn't surprise me any with how chaotic everything is...
All these people commenting don't know, that this is pretty normal comment to provoke (troll) people in internet. Also it might have been that he posted it when he was really frustrated about something, but it just wasn't meant to be taken seriously. I am still shocked that you can get sentenced to prison just for thought... like you haven't even planned to do such thing, but then you get sent to prison, even thought you haven't committed any crime yet. Can't they then put all skinheads to prison aswell, since it's pretty clear, that they have sick thoughts to kill/harm other people.
I forgot to mention that it was conservation between two people, and it was actually sarcastic reply to another person, so he wasn't even threatening anybody. From these comments, i get the idea, that these people think, that he made thread where he was joking about shooting kids at school.
What CNN left out here, does everyone here knows that before he made that comment, the other person joke to him "You're insane". The joke was to deny the insanity claim by taking it to the absurd. ABSURDITY. He was making the statement to say no by being ABSURD. Never had a moment a friend made a claim like "oh you're so crazy" and responded with "oh yeah, so crazy I'll do this _____!"
If you're just worried about safety, wouldn't a mere check on his house for weapons and an interview be enough to figure out if he really making a real threat?
You don't joke about shooting up a kindergarten...you just don't. Chances are he had no intention of every carrying out such a threat. It was most likely a dark and morbid comment meant to impress his friends... so many kids do it, why I have no clue... but it is what it is. However, given the severity of the Newtown tragedy it's simply not something you joke about. A real world does exist outside of Justin and his little virtual world and he should be taught a lesson in some common sense... not necessarily an 8 year plea deal or a 10 year max sentence, but time served and certainly some community service possibly helping families of child victims so he can see first hand how loosing a child is no joke.
It was SARCASM. The person called him crazy, so he responded back by taking to absurdity. The entire game thing is besides the point. Those who saying being careful, you never responded to a joke (Like a person call you "you're crazy"), and respond back with sarcasm ("Oh yeah, I'm so crazy I'll do something really, really crazy") to deny by taking it to the absurd?
You are the reason for 90% of America's suicides. You are so enveloped in your own thought that was created by your mindless acceptance of everything for face value, that you refuse to logically think. You are not a human being in which you will never understand what I'm currently explaining to you. I really wish I could muster up the will to write an endless amount of content about your psyche and how inhuman you've truly become. This isn't a matter of me having separate opinions. This comment isn't the start of an internet argument, I am finished when I post this, only hoping that you have gained a little insight and introspection while you brush this off as some wackjob. You are human fucking filth.
"you don't joke about ___"
Why not? Who does the joke hurt except maybe your tender feelings. I'm sorry, but if you can't handle a joke like that you probably shouldn't have internet access because you're only going to subject yourself to much worse. The simple fact is, the world isn't made of candle-scented farts and butterflies. People are going to make jokes about morbid things whether you like it or not, and to attempt to police our thoughts and morals in such a way is treasonous to what the American way really is (which seems to be what most Americans have forgotten in this age of political correctness). We are supposed to be a nation free to speak our mind against a tyrannical government, not one that uses the government to subject others to a tyranny of our own. Now the American way is oversensitivity and cowardice, bowing down to a system that would rather attempt to convict someone for a felony over something he said. What are you going to do when some day you joke about wanting to smack a politician upside the head and get arrested for threatening assault.
So...you admit its a joke, therefore he's going to jail for 8 years for a joke?
@Thenextstep: If you think this kid needs to stay in jail, then perhaps most of the online gaming community needs to be jailed. He was trash-talking, and yes, it gets that harsh online. And no, they're not all 19 year old kids – they're everyday people with blue and white collar jobs. Don't think so? Take a look around the next time you're at a professional sports game and see who's talking trash, then ask what they do for a living. You'd be surprised how many aren't 19 year old kids.
^^seriously. It was a joke. The police are trying to make a point. An unprecedented point mind you and quite lame but regardless, they're trying to stop that kind of language on the internet and make an example of this poor kid. Let him go. Don't take everything sooooo literally jackass.
Speaking as a School Psychologist who works with students on a daily basis, this is a child who is mentally ill and should receive intensive psychotherapeutic treatment. His words are harmful . If he thought the matter could be a basis for sarcastic expression, let alone thinking it could be joked about, he is indeed mentally unhinged. It is fine that his parents should be defending him because he is their child, but it is not acceptable that they should excuse his behavior as an innocent "joke".
Just goes to prove your quackery that you think you can "diagnose" someone over the Internet from a message board comment. Take your pseudoscience elsewhere.
The fact that your a school psychiatrist employed in ANY school system and that you think this kid is "mentally ill" based on his statement is more frightening to me than this incident.
C. Roberts, you don't have the qualifications to make a diagnosis, let alone a medical diagnosis such as a mental illness. You're just a school psychologist and based only on this comment, you must be a very poor one not to understand trollish behavior which is what this kid was displaying and is nearly universal on the internet, especially from young people.
School Psychologist? lol Really? Please post you certification.
well, as a school psychologist, you just need to take a giant chill pill there and figure out what a "mentally unhinged" child is. You people are the worst inflicters of mental abuse, by far. WT?; "mentally unhinged"? where's that in the DSM?
Wow.. No wonder Ben Franklin didn't think we would ever be able to keep our Bill Of Rights and Constitution with retards like you being allowed to vote. I knew things were bad.. But this opens my eyes to just how insane this country has become. Now that we're locking up kids for saying dopey things on line, the gulags and political prison camps can't be far behind.
This isn't as stupid as everyone is saying. I understand why this is happening. Picture yourself in the loop here. If someone told you what this kid said, would you want to be the policeman or judge in a video clip after the (potential) massacre saying "Well, we thought he was just joking." There is no down side (for you) to be extra cautious, but there is a tremendous down side (for everyone, including you) if you let it pass and you are wrong.
Reading his comment, it is obvious to me the kid was joking. But if I was a police officer and someone called me reporting this, I would not want to risk my entire career on that judgement.
Ask the incarcerated dude if there is no down side.
Surely it's pretty harmful to the kid? 5 months in prison without a trial is illegal here, I wonder why it isn't for you.
This is crazy if we let this happen will all be afraid to speak in a free country. In this country all we have the right of doing is buying stuff.
I am sure it was a stupid dump joke, however how are we to know for sure. Shame on the parens to think shooting a kindergarten is a a joke. The comment alone needs at least 1 year jail time to teach a lesson to all these kids. And what would happen to the law enforcement if they let it go and something happened. No this kid needs jail time (for bad joke????) maybe not 10 years but 1 year will teach him and kids like him some things are not acceptable.
It may very well have been a "joke" but either way your son is an absolute moron for saying those things after something like Sandy Hook happened. You don't "joke" around about shooting up an elementary school to watch the blood rain down. I suggest you put that kid in a mental institution.
How do you know he should be put in a mental institution? you are just one person out there. a YEAR in prison for saying something?! how crazy are we?I know people who have gone to therapy for saying things like that and come out smarter and more confident then you will ever be!"lock this kid up in a mental institution" give me a break. its ridiculous you could use some shock treatment not him!
I can see investigating the supposed threat, but at some point it has to come to a conclusion. Either try him or find it a non issue and let him go. Actually I'm not sure why he's even jailed for this to be investigated, there are people who've done assaults, robberies, and sexual assaults walking around my neighborhood wearing monitoring ankle bracelets. Once they found no weapons they could done as well with him.
You know what? Facebook is going to be the end of a lot of folks (along with Twitter). It's like an outlet for the slow and senseless. How many times has it been drilled in our heads that we need to be careful about what we post on Facebook? People have lost jobs, relationships, etc., yet folks still don't get it. Why is that? He's old enough to know better. This country has experienced devastating losses (this year alone), at the hands of crazies. You don't make terroristic threats on Facebook, and then act surprised when the government comes for you, because after all, it was "a joke". Yeah...I bet it's not funny now. This foolishness needs to stop. Wake up, for goodness sake!
but what did he say?
As always the parents say he is a good kid, he would never do anything like that! Well, they put the kid on suicide watch and this isn't don't arbitrarily, is is usually because the individual has expressed some intent in some way to harm himself. If this is the case then it show the kid is unstable and in need of help; and if he could this then he is capable of carrying out his threats. this is exactly why and how these kids get away with these kinds of tradgedies because no one wants to use their common sense and see that their child or friend is capable of such deeds and they may need help.
This is no joke. It's not sarcasm. There is absolutely nothing funny about threatening to shoot kindergarteners and eat their hearts as their blood spills out of their bodies. These are the words of a psychotic individual who needs to be severly punished. Was it a joke when those innocent children were killed in Sandy Hook? Was it a joke when that actress attempted to send ricin to our president? Was it a joke when the Tsarnaev brothers bombed the street of the Boston Marathon? Threats to US citizens are not funny. They are not jokes and they should be taken with absolute seriousness and come with a swift and harsh punishment. This man is 19 years old. Old enough to know that this was completely wrong of him to say. He should get 8 years, if not longer, in federal prison.
Wow 8 yrs for making what is agreeably an asinine remark at 19. Seriously?????
John Zawahri, Bryan Oliver, Adam Lanza, Cade Poulos, Robert Gladden and the list goes on of all good kids to their parents, well hear's news to you Mr + Mrs Carter "WE" American public – parents of children killed, citizens, we have for so long cried out why wasn't something done before when last tragedies have happened. So quit your crying Mr+Mrs Carter “He’s a good kid. He didn’t mean it. It was a joke. And he would never hurt anyone. He’s got younger siblings. And he’s good with children.”...... And Brutus was an honorable man.
"It was a joke"... well he should have known that his "joke" was in very poor taste and that his "sarcasm" is not funny to everyone and has consequences.
This is typical vindictive bullyism from Texas.
The $500,000 bail proves it. Are they going to try to give him the chair, as they do with everyone else?
This case should be thrown out immediately.
Worst headline ever. Do these writers read their work? Add a comma or two, good grief.
Where has journalism gone? What did he say? Which "law enforcement organization" arrested him? How about some of the particulars of the story? Did the 20 something author of this story lose their interest in the story before completing the article. What crap. Off to fond a legitimate news source to find out what is actually going on...
For someone to even joke about that is crazy. He deserves to sit in jail and maybe it will do him some good before he does do something stupid.
Looking at the comment he made I certainly would take it as a joke. It was a dumb thing to say but given that it clearly wasn't meant to be taken seriously I can't see cause to keep him in jail. Stupidity isn't a crime; there would be a lot fewer free people if it was. I get the desire to be overly cautious in the wake of mass shootings, but we shouldn't just check our brains at the door and go to a place of such incredible overreaction.
What a dumb-donkey this ADULT teenager is. Consequences...I love it!
Have any parents ever admitted that their precious child is a creep and should remained locked up? NO.. Parents never want to admit they raised a creep.
Doesn't anyone realize that actions have consequences? Nineteen is not a child. Should have know better!
This was a stupid and insensitive thing to say, obviously. Especially coming on the heels of Newtown. It is also obviously not terrorism. It's a stupid comment from an immature nineteen year old. Legally and morally, he deserves our rebuke and nothing more.
People need to learn that actions have consequences. His comments would make anyone's blood run cold–this wasn't a single, taken-out-of-context comment in reaction to a fuzzy kitten meme. That said, I think the better place for this man is a court-ordered psychiatric facility.
Common Sense... your comment makes none lol
You have a hard time convincing me that CNN doesn't know how to write when you can't properly distinguish between 'their' and 'they're'.
That and an ellipsis typically has three dots, not infinity.
Gee, how many times have we heard phrases like "He/she's a good kid/person", "He/she would never hurt anyone", "He/she didn't mean anything by it". Law enforcement is right to detain him and they have a responsibility to make sure he is fully vetted. If there's doubt that he's a threat then he should not be allowed out. We have too many examples of behavior like this that results in tragedies, and too many cases where people after the fact state they saw signs of the behavior.
TRUE, and how many times as teenagers have we said something really stupid and immediately regretted it but spent months in jail for it facing years? Im sure he "got it" a long time ago.
This is what happens when your rights are being limited and stripped. Saying ignorant things that you should not typically say anywhere you are and or saying things against the government. That go against the governments agenda could lead you to prison. So there you have it in a nutshell people, you have no right to free speech. Even these so called news reporters show you that. They can't have options in America about the news they cover. What? Are you serious?
Consequences of actions. We don't live in a world where individuals can be "sarcastic" about terror. They won't let someone making terrorist threats walk around the streets during an investigation. He'll be let go as soon as it's over. I bet he never says anything stupid online again or otherwise.
Geeze, CNN is SO BAD in they're headlines you don't know who's in jail for the stupid kids threats...... That mental needs to stay in jail. For the sake of all schools, and movie theaters..................
The reason we have rule of law, a first amendment, and a Supreme Court that decides things like the Brandenburg vs. Ohio line of cases, is so that vapid morons like yourself don't dispense justice at the head of a mob.
This kid will win, and I hope he sues the idiot DA under 42 usc 1983.
It was very simple for me, it was the teen of the father being interviewed...duh! If you don't like CNN, why do you keep reading articles here? And keep posting comments!!! The internet has "literally" hundreds of other news sites to visit.
This is paranoia at it's worst.
How is it America can sell this kid a gun no problem but he'll go to jail for inappropriate sarcasm?
This is not justice by any means.
Spoken like a true idiot! These threats, while valid or not, should NOT go unpunished. This is serious s#@t!!!!! A terrorist threat is a terrorist threat..... NONE should be taken lightly!!!!!
So we should jail everybody that tells a bad joke?
The headline is just poor grammatically – it means that the teen was jailed, not the father of the teen. You would think that a news organization as big as CNN wouldn't put such poorly written headlines on their site. On the other hand, the kid made a really bad mistake – should he really be in jail and subject to solitary confinement and being attacked while the wheels of justice slowly churn? I think that they could release him on bond and put a cuff on him to make sure he stays put while he awaits trial.
"For the sake of all schools, and movie theaters", huh? He displayed a lack of common sense, obviously, but it seems quite apparent that he was being sarcastic. So which is a greater abuse of a lack of common sense? His comments or the authorities choosing to to bow to political correctness by keeping him incarcerated. Are you more scared of him or the police and court system's ability to keep you in jail?
If you try and read all the words, the headline actually says that the father of the teen, who is jailed, talks to cnn.
We don't jail people in this country for speech. All you loons in the comments advocating such are nuts. Have you read the 1st Amendment to our Constitution? The thought police have gone mad! If you haven't committed a crime, or made a serious threat WITH THE MEANS TO CARRY IT OUT, then you're just a blowhard. And threats should lead to monitoring, not detention. This young man should be released immediately!
THE THOUGHT POLICE ARE EXCELLENT ERNET THEY?
The FATHER is speaking out for his son??? Im sorry but this is a 19 year old MAN, not a child. Im assuming he sees the news (unless hes one of those gamers that thats all he does) and see what's on .......the school shootings and sees the pain and suffering the parents that lost their children have gone thru and CONTINUE to go thru.
THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE, ITS INSENSITIVE, and SHOULD be taken as a threat.
he did NOT use a one word as a slip up (like most everyone has in their life, and some are even intentional at that) I am NOT defending her, but Paula Deen used a 1 word slur and she is being pulled by sponsors left and right. This MAN, made a long, drawn out, detailed comment about what he would do, and what would like to see. If in fact he had followed thru with his rant 2 weeks from now, some might say, there were no signs of aggression. Yes, there are.....and police are taking it seriously.
you don't get on a plane, and mention a bomb....youd be pulled off and most likely the plane would be evacuated. COMMENTS like that are taken seriously!!!
In light of the most recent Sandy Hook School, AND THE OTHERS BEFORE IT.....comments like what Justin Carter (19) made, SHOULD AND WERE TAKEN SERIOUSLY!!
DADDY, (Jack Carter) you cant be held accountable in a court of law, for your sons words or actions....Unfortunately for you and mostly Justin, he WILL, need his own attorney, and will have to put in a plea himself....you cant go running to the judge for him! He WILL be charged as an adult SHOULD he be found guilty in a court of law. It doesnt matter that Justin is in jail, upset and crying...he has to answer for himself. what I am saying may sound harsh, but just think of how the Sandy Hook victims and families feel TO THIS DAY, because of what happened to their children, teachers, friends, and loved ones.....
I really cant imagine that someone in their right mind would make a comment such as what he did. 19 is a man, an adult.....lets see how this plays out. Better safe than sorry. God Bless the victims and families of Sandy Hook, Colorado, Oaklahoma, Virginia Tech and ALL OTHERS..... and I myself apologize for Justins comment....it breaks my heart for you! >
This just shows how ridiculous political correctness has gone. Anytime a white makes a joke about anything they get arrested or are shunned but blacks continue to make jokes and it is ok because they are protected with free speech. There is a big difference between yelling fire in a movie theater with patrons and making a joke on the internet. Again the Obama administration dismantles the Constitution and the bill of rights.
This is ridiculous. I don't think I know one person who hasn't said something regrettable and/or threatening on Facebook.
I think that he should be prosecuted. This is not funny. Id hate for him to be released and then carry out his plan. As a public school employee, we teach our children about the seriousness of what they say when it relates to harming others. Id like to think that he has received similar guidance over the last few years with the string of violence that has occured in our schools. This is just not funny.
they're doing him just right. he needs to be used as an example, due to all of the shootings, senseless shooting and killings, mind you, in just-recent episodes regarding those 12 young kids and several adults that included teachers. so with that said, he doesn't need any leniency none whatsoever. he needs to serve that time, pay that fine and learn never ever to joke about nothing involving killing anyone, let alone innocent childrens. let him sit there in jail and serve that time– give him something to ponder on to never do in life and as long as he lives.
I wonder what would possess a teen to say something that macabre. Can't negate that kind of graphic comment with "LOL."
Wake up, you idiot! In this day and age, normal people do not joke about terrorist threats.
...people joke about everything....-_-
you're the one who should wake up.....
I have tweeted about your petition and I will pray for Justin. I have dealt with police that overreact as well and I ended up with arthritis in my neck from being beaten up and spending time in jail and anger management counseling when the callers were the ones that really needed the A.M. counseling. One caller was my ex- who was sexually abused at 13 by an adult and had served 2 tours of duty in Vietnam as a Navy SEAL. The other was a man I lived with who was bipolar and refused meds and counselling. I should have been smarter...
I like how the news clip cuts the woman's comments to omit "Just Kidding" between the comment and "LOL" (sarc). How can we let this happen to someone who so clearly is just a kid trading jabs with a friend on a gaming site? No weapons, no plans, no history, no evidence of actual intent, all signs point toward joking comment and yet that doesn't matter??? Imagine how many times you could be sent to prison if that is all that mattered. If that is the height that we set the bar, we are opening the door to serious injustice. No common sense is being used here, and CNN has intentionally packaged this report to protect the Law Enforcement Officers, instead of shedding any light on the story for the individual who is the victim of an actual crime, Justin Carter.
This is out of control. This kid may have made a really bad decison but even I can see this was a bad humor joke. I have many friends who have said similar things. Being a gamer we live in another world. 13yr kids tell me they are going to skull fu*k my mother. This is Life and the cops are blowing this out of proportion. Let him go and give him probation if you must but anything more is excessive to the crime. Also is bond is laughable. Ive seen rapist get lower bonds.
