Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand on Sexual Assualt in the Military

U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand is also working hard to try to improve how the U.S. military deals with sexual assaults. There are over 25,000 unwanted sexual advances in the military each year, but only a small percentage are reported.

"They don't trust the chain of command," Gillibrand says. They are concerned about "retaliation."

"You're never going to change the culture of military," where those in the chain of command frequently choose not to take these issues to trial.  Gillibrand's bill is pushing for more objectivity by having a more neutral party make decisions about which sexual assualt cases go to trial.
